Home Economics 1

Monday and Tuesday

Complete CPR/AED Training with Nurse Sullivan and receive earned Certificates
for CMS Babysitting and AHA CPR/AED & First Aid.

Wednesday through Friday

We will begin our Sewing Unit. Students will identify the names and
functions
of the various parts of the sewing machine. Students will also demonstrate
knowledge of the history of the sewing machine.

A Sewing Letter is coming home with your student on Monday. It identifies
the
materials necessary for the Sewing Unit. Home Ec.1 classes are making a
flanged pillow case for a 16" pillow form. This is a classic pattern that
the
students can later adapt for multiple decorative uses in the home. It's
really cool for the first pillow to match what's in their bedroom, but of
course, that's completely up to the student and you.

Home Economics 2

Monday and Tuesday

Students will complete their Living Expenses Project, and we will wrap up
with
class discussion.

Wednesday through Friday

Students will begin our Advanced Sewing Unit by constructing Pajama Pants, or
better called, "Drawstring Lounge Pants." These have always been favorites
of
the kids, and usually get worn and worn and worn. Be looking for a sewing
letter to come home with your student on Monday detailing the supplies and
materials needed for this project.

NOTE: "Participation, Cooperation, and Best Effort"

That's my expectation of all my kids. It's now time to ramp up with a faster
pace and more individual responsibility, but that just makes things more
exciting. The sewing machines are really fun to operate, and it's super
great
to see a flat piece of fabric turn into something you can really use!

Okay! Here we go! Another big adventure!

Home Economics 1 ~ Carroll Middle School

Dear Parents,

Your child’s Home Economics class is beginning their sewing unit very soon.
The sewing project for Home Economics 1 is a pillow. This project provides
students with the opportunity to familiarize them with the sewing machine
using basic stitching, as well as basic hand sewing techniques.

I have selected this project for the learning opportunities and the minimal
cost factors. It will provide students with learning activities focusing on
•	following directions
•	organization
•	time management
•	basic sewing skills

Each student is responsible for selecting his/her own sewing supplies.
Please take your child with you to select the fabric! Supplies are due in
class by Tuesday, October 14, 2008.

Supply List

1.	1¼ yard of cotton or cotton/polyester blend fabric. DO NOT get
silky, stretchy, fuzzy, furry, or satiny fabric ! Also, be sure the fabric
is either solid, striped, or has a small repeated design.
2.	Cotton thread to match---all-purpose thread (not quilting,
embroidery, or craft thread!)
3.	Pin cushion
4.	Straight pins (be sure to put pins in pin cushion BEFORE bringing to
class)
5.	Tape measure
6.	Scissors
7.	Seam ripper
8.	Sewing gauge
9.	Plastic shoe box for storage
10.16” pillow form for square pillow (keep at home…do NOT bring to class)!

Home Economics 2

Dear Parents:

Your child’s Home Economics class has started their sewing unit. The sewing
project for Home Economics 2 is pajama pants. This project provides
students with the opportunity to be familiarized with the sewing machine
using basic stitching, as well as basic hand sewing techniques.

I have selected this project for the learning opportunities and the minimal
costs. It will provide students with learning activities focusing on
following directions, organization, time management, color coordination, and
basic sewing skills.

I will be bringing a variety of appropriate fabric samples to class on
Wednesday of this week (Oct. 8). Students will need to make a selection and
I will pick up what is ordered. The cost of fabric, thread, elastic, and
drawstrings will total between $16.00 and $22.00 depending on individual
selection.

In addition, each student is responsible for bringing his or her own sewing
supplies. Supplies are due in class by Wednesday, October 15, 2008.

Supply List

•	Straight pins
•	Pin cushion
•	Sewing gauge
•	Scissors for fabric
•	Seam Ripper
•	Plastic box with lid (the size of a standard shoe box)

Note: Put the straight pins into the pin cushion before coming to class
with them.
