Students and the peer mentors are making Cedar Valley bracelets to sell as our first fundraiser. They have black and purple beads on them and white beads with the letters "CEVMS” and cost $2.00. We now have bracelets (more masculine) with white beads spelling "JAGS" on a purple cord (no beads) for $2.00 each. The beaded bracelets are almost gone. Please let me know if you are interested in purchasing one or more soon. We have experienced great success with this fundraiser so far. Proceeds go towards field trips in our community. (Preview: We will be offering bracelets with McNeil colors/letters spelling “MCNEIL" and Round Rock colors/letters spelling "DRAGONS" as we get closer to the holidays for $3.00 each.)
We finished our book IQ, this year's "Read it forward" book. In the book the author mentions a "TastyKake" treat. The class practiced their letter writing skills by writing a thank you letter to Hoody’s subs.
This past week....
ELA: Students are working on their fluency, comprehension, and grammar skills. Our rotating groups worked so well that we are continuing them to learn a variety of reading and language activities. Library is on Wednesdays, 9th period, at the end of the day.
Math: Students continue to use a calculator to compute correctly. They worked on addition and subtraction problem solving pages. On Friday, students played either a new money game or the Dollar Dice game.
Science: Students continued with their study of matter. We focused on states of matter and completed several activities and experiments to support student learning. This coming week we will wrap this up and have a test over the materials.
Social Studies: We reviewed Texas information. Students enjoyed playing a game where we divided the class into 2 groups, each group with a peer mentor to help them. They took turns asking the other team a question. The team then had 30 seconds to come up with the answer. They all did very well and the game ended with a tie. Students will take a test on information we covered about Texas on Monday. Each week students recycle paper for several classrooms and practiced writing their personal information (name, address, phone number, etc.).
Please send back the purple folders daily along with the orange homework folder if it comes home. Sticker charts and papers in the “to keep” side of the purple folder should be kept at home. Each sticker represents 1 cent that your child earns in the classroom. Students keep track of their money earned (daily) on their own personal ledger. Money is spent twice a month at our “school store”. Lack of a sticker or a sad face for a class lets you know if your child had a difficult time in one or more periods throughout the day.
Our attendance clerk, Ms. Johnson, asks that you contact the attendance office in the morning if your child is ill or not coming to school for another reason. You can call as early as you like and leave a message at 428-2305. If you have a chance, please call the classroom at 428-2340 or send me an e-mail so I am aware of any illnesses that may affect other students in the classroom.
Upon your child's return to school, send a note indicating why your child missed school and the dates he/she was absent. If the absence was due to a Doctor or Dentist visit, ask them for a note to give the school so the absence can be “excused”. This is kept in an attendance folder in the office.
