November 19, 2009

Ms. Hanna will be attending the Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented 
Conference in Houston on Thursday and Friday, December 3 & 4. There will be 
no before school tutoring those days.

November 12, 2009

Ms. Hanna will not be available before school Friday, November 13th. She has 
a math department meeting.

November 6, 2009

Ms. Hanna will not be in until 7:30 on Thursday, November 12th.

October 26, 2009

Ms. Hanna will be out on Monday, November 2nd. There will be no before school 
tutoring.

Students on the Gutierrez Team who will be out Friday for the field trip must 
turn in their Weekly Review prior to leaving.

October 19, 2009

Ms. Hanna has a meeting at 7:45 on Tuesday, October 20th. Any student needing 
assistance should arrive no later than 7:30 Tuesday morning.

October 14, 2009

Ms. Hanna will not be here on Thursday, October 15th. No before school 
tutoring.

October 6, 2009

Ms. Hanna has a math department meeting Friday, October 9th at 7:45. Any 
student needing tutoring that day should attend no later than 7:30.

Ms. Hanna will be out Monday, October 5th. No before school tutoring that day.

I desperately need card stock. Many of the hands-on, fun activities that 
require moving around in class need cards, spinners, etc. to be created on 
card stock. This is particularly true for both 6th TAG and 6th Accelerated 
Math classes. Anyone who can help with this supply is greatly appreciated.

Upcoming 6th TAG Pretest!
Next week, 6th grade TAG students will take a pretest over fraction and 
decimal concepts and operations. This is their opportunity to "show what you 
know," and place out of part or even all of the unit. It may be a good idea 
to look over those operations before the pretest to make sure all the ideas 
are fresh.

“When [students] discover during elementary school that they can get high 
praise for tasks or projects they complete with little or no effort, they 
may conclude that being smart means doing things easily. The longer they are 
allowed to believe this, the harder it is to rise to the challenge when they 
finally encounter one. The students I worry about most are those who bring 
home perfect report cards starting in first grade. They sail from grade 
school through high school, concluding along the way that smart people must 
always give the impression that they don’t have to work hard. Often, we send 
these students to fine colleges, where everyone in the freshman class was in 
the top five percent of their high-school graduating class. Suddenly the 
competition for As is fierce and learning takes serious study skills, not to 
mention time and real effort. Where do we want these kids to be when they 
realize they aren’t perfect students? Surely not alone in a freshman dorm 
far from home.”

Dear Parents:

Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year. I am so excited to have the 
opportunity to work with your student this year. We will be learning many 
things, working hard, and having a lot of fun.

My goal for students is for them to become aware of, and responsible for, 
their own learning. We will be developing these skills throughout the year, 
but I want them to learn to recognize when they have mastered a skill and 
when to ask for additional assistance. Please encourage your child to 
establish a dialogue with me about their questions, concerns and successes.

Please see the course syllabus for each course for more information.

I look forward to meeting each of you and working together to foster 
independence, work ethic, and a love of mathematics in each of these 
students.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns, and encourage 
your students to do the same.
