PHYSICAL EDUCATION!!!

MISSION

Our program is designed to help students grow physically, socially, emotionally, and mentally.  Research shows that by the time children reach the age of 14, exercise and eating habits are already formed; therefore, a strong physical education program in the middle school years can make a difference in forming positive health habits for a lifetime. With the knowledge gained through participation in this course, students will have the ability to develop their own physical fitness programs, make healthier decisions concerning the care of their bodies, and find activities they can enjoy for a lifetime.

UNIFORM

  • Gray T-shirt and red gym shorts; these may be purchased from the CTMS P.E. Department for $20.00. Coaches will print the student's last name, with a permanent marker, inside the name bars on the T-shirt and shorts.
  • Students will also be required to purchase a heart monitor elastic strap to be used weekly with our heart monitors. The cost of the strap is $5.00.
  • Students need to wear socks and a pair of supportive athletic shoes with laces.
  • Spandex tights or "biker" shorts worn under gym shorts are not required but recommended for modesty.
  • Sweat pants and a sweatshirt worn over P.E. uniform are optional but recommended during cold weather. (any color)
  • If this uniform is altered by cutting the pant legs, shirttail, or sleeves or decorating it with pictures or words, or if the uniform is lost or stolen, the student will be required to purchase a replacement uniform.

Locker/Lock

Each student will be issued a locker and a combination lock that should remain on the locker at all times. Students will be required to pay for damaged or lost locks. The teacher will have a list of all locker numbers and combinations in case of problems and for reference. Students should not share lockers and may change lockers only with the permission of the teacher. Valuables are the responsibility of the student and should be locked in the locker at all times.

Grades

6th Grade – Physical Education – Participation 55%, Responsibility 15%, Fitness/Skill Assessment – 30%

7th and 8th Grade - The six weeks grade will be 60% - Activity Participation, 30% Fitness, and 10% - Responsibility/Sportsmanship.

DRESS OUT EVERY DAY

Should a student forget to bring gym clothes or shoes, he/she will participate fully in school clothes. Sitting out is not an option. The coach will document each time a student fails to bring gym clothes or proper shoes. Failure to bring gym clothes or shoes 5 times in a six weeks period will result in D-hall.

Participation

Students must participate in the class activity each day unless a written note signed by a physician or guardian is presented to the teacher. The student is required to dress out and participate in some way even if excused from the activity portion of the class. A written assignment may be given in place of the day's activity. If the illness or injury requires the student to be excused from participation for more than five days, a note from a physician is required.

Safety

Locker rooms are used for dressing, undressing, and showering. No running or roughhousing is permitted. Aerosol spray cans and glass containers are hazardous and unacceptable; roll-on or stick deodorant and "pump" style hair spray in plastic containers are acceptable. Curling/flat irons (electric or portable) and hair dryers are not permitted. Food, candy, and gum are not allowed in the locker room or the gym. Students are encouraged to carry water bottles during class and in the gym and it must be in a resealable container.

Activity will not begin without the teacher. At no time should the student touch the equipment unless instructed to do so by the teacher. Students should listen carefully and follow the teacher's instructions closely.

End of Class Period

Showers are encouraged but not required. Good hygiene is encouraged. "Wet wipes" are good for getting the sweat and bacteria off of the body before returning to class. A student may be asked to shower if there are complaints about him/her.
