Daily Five

Second-Grade-D5.bmp

I am no longer a second grade teacher, but after removing this page, I had many teachers email and asked to see it again.  I am glad it's useful to teachers, so here you go!

Starting our day, the Daily 5 way!

When we begin our guided reading/Daily 5 time, first I announce to the class which students will be at my table for their guided reading lesson.  Those students move to the table and begin a self guided review I have already placed on the table that is on their reading level.

Then I check in with the rest of the students to see which of the Daily 5 they will be working on for the round.  I mark their choice on this check in sheet.

Students begin to move to their round as soon as they check in.  I do not make them sit with the rest of the class until everyone has checked-in.

Students know where to find materials for their round because I have all of the areas clearly labeled.  Here are my Daily 5 signs and anchor charts.  You will notice the same clip art on the signs and anchor charts for each or the five areas.  This helps my ESL and struggling readers to find their way around the room during Daily 5 time and to know their expectations for the materials and procedures.

Read to Someone

Students who are reading to someone choose a bag of books.  In each bag is two of the same title so each student can have a copy.

Students know to sit EEKK.

Pic-D5-Spinner.JPG

Students who Read to Someone may choose a spinner to ask each other questions after they finish their story.  I currently have two spinners available for students to use.  you can download them here and here.  The paper arrow is not the greatest on the file, but you can purchase arrows from here that will poke through the hole in the middle of the spinner.  Voila!

Students may also retell the story to their partner using this graphic organizer to help them.  I use this organizer during whole group lessons to retell our story, so students really know how to use it.  To begin, students tell the WHO (characters), WHERE (setting), and WHAT (plot) in the story.  Then they give the four most important details in the story.  Last, they remember to stop at the end, instead of near the end or in the middle.
Read to Self

In their book box is five books, their whisper phone, a timer, and their Daily 5 folder.  Students filled their book boxes in the morning during our morning procedures.  I allow even numbered students to shop one day then odd numbered students to shop the next day.

This little shopping cart tells students if it is their day to book shop.

I was given a class set of whisper phones and timers through a Donors Choose grant.  Each student has their own whisper phone and timer in their book box.

Students use their timers to track their fluency.  Students keep their fluency practice sheet in their Daily 5 folder.

Students enjoying their Read to Self time.  Students know where to go for their Read to Self because their Book Nook tells them where to go.

Pic-D5-BookNook.JPG

I created my Book Nook chart by touring my room and deciding on good spots where students could read.  Their name is attached to a clip that points to their Book Nook for the week.  I change the Book Nook clips on Friday afternoon.  We review our new Book Nooks on Monday mornings during our morning meeting time.

Students who read at their desk may use book clip lights that I bought at Dollar Tree.

Work on Writing

Students who choose Work on Writing have many choices.  One of the favorite choices is to write a letter to a friend in our classroom or to their pen pal in Illinois.

Pic-Silly-Pens.JPG

This is our can of silly pens.  Students may use them only during Work on Writing time.  I have found that this is the least favorite of the Daily 5, so I try to find the little things that add a spark to writing.  Silly pens work!

Working with Words

This is the area students go to choose their Working with Words activity.  I placed the materials in the little sliding drawers for quick retrieval of materials.  Many of the printables needed for this area can be accessed on my teacher page.
Listening to Reading

Pic-D5-Listening.JPG

Listening to Reading materials can be found here.  I received the CD players and TAG pens and books through Donors Choose grants.

Students have three choices for Listening to Reading:

AR Tests
Uh oh!  I have a question!

Pic-D5-Experts.JPG

Questions arise all the time for students, but I cannot spend my Guided Reading time answering them.  I appointed several children who catch on to routines quickly to be "experts".  These children know that they can answer any questions that arise.  Click here to print off your own experts poster.

Pic-Talk-Ticket.JPG

If the experts cannot answer the question or if a child needs to go to the bathroom, they may lay their talk ticket on my table and then walk away.  I call that child to my table whenever I have a moment to help them.

Please visit my teacher page for more Daily 5 printables!
