CTMS 2008-2009 Mr. Boykin – Pre-Algebra Syllabus Welcome to my class! Our goals are to make you a better problem solver, to prepare you for Algebra I, and to make you a highly motivated student that loves and appreciates the inner beauty of mathematics. The following syllabus is an outline of what is expected from each student in my classroom. Please keep it in your math binder throughout the year, and refer to it as necessary. I. CURRICULUM· Order of Operations · Probability · Problem Solving · Integers · Geometry · Exponents/Roots · Fractions/Decimals/Percents · Data Analysis · Functions · Algebraic Equations · Measurement/Estimation · Polynomials II. MATERIALSThe following items must be brought to class on a daily basis: · Binder with Loose Leaf Notebook Paper · Pencil with Eraser (Assignments written in pen will not be accepted.) · Basic Calculator · Text Book · Planner Students who fail to bring these supplies to class will be considered unprepared. On days that I require special materials such as graph paper, a message will be written on the white board outside the door. III. GRADESThe following grading scale will apply in all CTMS Pre-Algebra Classes: Assessments (Tests, Projects, and Quizzes) – 70%Homework and Class Work – 30% All students are required to record their grades on an assignment sheet each six weeks. Each student will receive a midterm grade report after the third week in the grading period. Students may access their updated grades online at the Skyward website. Grades on Skyward are ALWAYS up to date. You must enter a user name and password to use this site. Students who bring printed copies of their current grade with a parent signature on Mondays (or the first day of the week) will receive 15 extra credit homework points each time. IV. MAKE-UP WORK AND LATE WORKThe following is taken from the GCISD Student Handbook. Students shall be expected to make up assignments and tests after an excused absence. Students shall be allowed one school day for every school day missed, plus one additional school day, to make up work or tests. If a student submits all make-up work and completes all tests on time, they have the opportunity to receive full credit. It is the STUDENT’S responsibility to find out what assignment(s) they are responsible for. Assignments will be posted every day on the internet at http://teacherweb.com/ TX/CrossTimbersMiddleSchool/Boykin/. You can also look at the assignment board in the classroom, or ask me. In accordance with the CTMS Math Department policy, late work will not be accepted. V. CONDUCTStudents are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior within the classroom. Students that exhibit behaviors contrary to the GCISD Code of Conduct will be subject to a range of consequences under my discipline plan, which has been approved by the Cross Timbers Administration. Please refer to the “Class Rules” handout for more details about conduct expectations. VI. TUTORINGTutoring sessions will be held every Monday and Wednesday from 3:15-3:45, and every morning except Tuesday by appointment. In tutoring sessions, you may: · Receive valuable one-on-one instruction from the teacher on the topics of your choice. · Receive peer tutoring from other students. · Make up tests that you have done poorly on. · Complete additional assignments for extra credit points. VII.
Students may leave the room only in an emergency, if they are doing an errand, or if they are called to the office. Anyone leaving the room must fill out the appropriate information in their planner, in accordance with CTMS policy. Only one student is allowed to leave at a time. VIII. ENTERING AND LEAVING THE CLASSROOMUpon entering the classroom, immediately read the board and follow the instructions. Most days, there will be TAKS-style warm-up problems on the board. You will have five minutes to complete them, and we will check them together. I will dismiss the class only when everyone is quiet, and the room is clean. Students who are not in the room when the bell rings will be marked tardy. In accordance with CTMS policy, students who are tardy to class the first time will receive a warning. The second tardy will result in a detention, and the third tardy will result in an extended detention. Subsequent tardies will result in office referrals. IX. ASSIGNMENTSStudents must “show their work” on all assignments and assessments, even if the questions are multiple choice. The teacher will tell the students which steps must be included prior to the assignment. Credit will not be given for answers only, even if they are correct. Please include your name, date, and a description of the assignment on each paper that you turn in. When you receive a graded assignment, you must update your Assignment Sheet. I will not accept arguments that you turned an assignment in after this time. It is your responsibility to make sure that you get back every assignment you completed. X. CHEATINGCheating will not be tolerated on any level in Pre-Algebra. If a student is found guilty of cheating or allowing other students to cheat, they will receive an automatic zero for the assignment with no chance to improve the score. GCISD and the Cross Timbers Administration support this policy.
