KEYBOARDING SYLLABUS
Keyboarding is an exploratory course designed to enable students to develop the touch method in operating keyboards and in producing business documents. This course is offered to 8th graders for one semester. Emphasis is placed on correct technique and formatting skills. Students are also exposed to career exploration, which include job and company research, resume/cover letter writing and interview skills.
SEMESTER TOPICS
- Computer terminology, history, care and operation
- Correct keyboarding techniques and speed building
- Punctuation and proofreader symbols

Practicing at least 15 minutes per day can help improve your speed and technique in keyboarding.

SEMESTER OBJECTIVES - Students should be able to
- Demonstrate correct keyboarding techniques at all times
- Demonstrate understanding and use of basic computer terminology.
- Touch type a minimum of 27 gwam with 6 errors or less
- Input, store, retrieve, format, print, proofread and edit typed documents
- Use computer hardware and word processing software to produce personal-use documents.
- Demonstrate proper job and interview skills
ASSIGNMENTS: A lesson a day from the textbook to be completed in class. Copied lessons of class assignments are available for at home completion or for practice. Assignments must be turned in on time. Students are responsible for missed work due to absences.

NEWS! Students who successfully complete the semester with 80% average and a 27gwam with 6 errors will be exempted from keyboarding in high school.
CLASSROOM RULES
- Have a good attitude, be prepared, respectful and ready to learn.
- Bring binder and supplies to class daily, use your time wisely.
- Refrain from tampering with computer hardware and software.
- Take care of classroom equipment and supplies. Do not write on desk, computer or books.
- Keep gum, food or drink out of the classroom.
- Report damages or problems promptly. DO NOT TRY TO FIX them.
CLASS SUPPLIES
Required Materials for Keyboarding Class
- One three-ring binder
- Black/blue pen or a pencil
- Two 3.5” high density diskettes
GOOD TECHNIQUE GUIDELINES
Good technique refers to good demonstration of the following characteristics:
- Body erect, hips to back of chair
- Feet flat on floor
- Wrists low but not resting on the keyboard
- Elbows near the body
- Eyes on copy (no dependence on looking at hands or keyboard)
- Textbook at 45 degree angle at right of computer on stand
- Curved fingers on keys
- Sit 6-8 inches or a hand-span away from keyboard

CARE OF DISKETTES
- Keep away from magnets.
- Do not bend or place heavy objects on disk.
- Do not layer or stack labels.
- Keep in disk cover or case when not in use.
- Keep away from heat, water, dust and sunlight.
- Wait until green light goes off before removing from disk drive.
- Always have clean hands when using disk or operating the computer.
- Do not eat or drink when using disk or operating the computer.
X-TRA CREDIT– Two hours typing per week on keyboarding or other class assignments. Parent or guardian signature required.
