PARENTS AS READING PARTNERS

GRADES K--5

Dates: August 2009--May 2010

The purpose of this reading program is to encourage each Curtsinger student to read daily at home and to develop a lifelong habit of daily reading.

To participate in the program, the child reads at least fifteen minutes outside of school and records the dates of his/her reading on a reading record sheet given to students by the Curtsinger Library. When he/she has read 25 days, the student then turns in the record sheet to the library and receives a certificate and a small award such as a special bookmark, pencil, reading ribbon, etc. When returning a reading sheet, the student can obtain a new one at the library. All students who read at least 225 days during the year attend a reading celebration party in May and receive a complimentary soft cover book of their choice.

THE TEXAS BLUEBONNET CLUB GRADES 3--5

Dates: August 2009--January 31, 2010

Every year a new list of twenty books, which includes several genres of literature, are chosen to comprise the Texas Bluebonnet Club list. Members of a state committee select these twenty books.

Curtsinger students who read at least five of the Texas Bluebonnet Club books by January 31, 2008, become members of the state-wide Texas Bluebonnet Reading Club. They vote on their favorite books on January 31, and their votes go to Austin to be included in the state count.

At Curtsinger, five of the books are read and discussed in the classrooms so that all third, fourth, and fifth grade students will become familiar with some of the new books. Students who read all of the assigned books (nineteen books this year) also receive a personalized trophy and attend the Texas Bluebonnet Club Bash in the spring.

The Texas Bluebonnet Reading Club encourages Texas children to read more books from a variety of genres, develop powers of discrimination, and identify favorite books.

SIX FLAGS' SIX HOUR READING CLUB K--5

January 20010--March 2010

This popular reading program encourages students to read for recreation. Students who read at least six hours outside of school, record their reading on the official record sheets, and return the record sheets to the library by March 1st will receive a complimentary Six Flags' ticket to be used in the summer of 2008.

CALDECOTT CHALLENGE READING CLUB

Second Grade students at Curtsinger Elementary School have the opportunity to participate in The Caldecott Challenge Reading Program sponsored by the Curtsinger Library. During the school year, these children can read at least ten books that were awarded the Caldecott Gold Medal, complete a short report on each book, and return the reports to the library. Students cannot receive credit for books read by the second grade teachers in class or by Ms. Scott in the library.

All students who complete the challenge will receive a special certificate and be invited to a celebration reading party in the spring. The deadline for all reading and reports is May 1, 2010.
