I can't believe that February is already here! January flew right past us!
This month we will be working on the following topics:
Reading: We are reading and comparing different kinds of genres - fiction,
non-fiction, myths, tall tales, legends, and fairy tales.
Writing: We are learning how to take a small moment and "explode" it. We
are also working on researching information about penguins and writing the
information in paragraph forms. They will then type their paragraphs into
their penguin power point.
Math: We are learning how to write, draw and identify fractions. We will be
reviewing number sense - writing and reading numbers to 999, comparing
numbers using symbols >, <, and =, and ranking numbers from least to
greatest. We will also be reviewing time and money. Please help your child
with counting coins by pulling out your pocket change and having your child
count it. (Less than $1.00.) If your child is struggling with counting
coins, you might want to use this incentive - if your child counts the change
correctly - they get to keep the change! We will also continue to add and
subtract 2-digit numbers with and without regrouping.
Science: We are currently learning about cycles. This month we are observing
the moon (when the weather is cooperative) and recording the phase of the
moon on our yellow homework sheet. Please keep this yellow sheet in their
blue take-home folder, since we will be discussing the phases frequently. We
will also be experimenting with sounds and shadows.
Social Studies: We will be reading and researching information about some of
our historical figures, like Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Martin
Luther King, Jr., Harriet Tubman, and George Washington Carver. We will
discuss important events in their lives as we make timelines.
Keep up the reading for at least 20 minutes every night. These minutes can
count toward the Six Flags Six Hour Reading Club. Don't forget to turn in
your child's log by February 19th, so they can get a free ticket into Six
Flags!
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
