Syllabus

Spanish IA/Señora Cordova

Dear Students and Parents,

I would like to welcome you back to the new school year. I am so excited to
get started on learning Spanish and experiencing the Hispanic culture.
Spanish is an academic elective. Students who successfully complete Spanish
IA and IB will receive one year of high school credit. Students will then be
eligible to take Spanish II in high school. Learning a foreign language is
very exciting and rewarding but can be challenging and requires hard work and
dedication; like anything in life. Students should be prepared to study,
practice vocabulary and grammar on a daily basis. Students should as well be
prepared to complete assigned homework and projects.

The following information will discuss class goals, policies and needed
supplies. Please familiarize yourself with this information.

Thank you & ¡Bienvenidos a la clase de español!

Supply list (required supplies)

•Spiral bound notebook (to be left in classroom) this notebook will be used
for daily warm-ups and activities.

•Three ring binder (this will be used to store and organize; notes, handouts
and graded work.)

•Two dividers

•Ruled notebook paper

•Pencil or Pen (preferably blue or black)

Note: If it is better for the student to place Spanish dividers in a binder
with another subject that will work just fine.

Supplies that are not required but would be helpful to student;
•Index cards small or large to create vocabulary flashcards.
•Highlighter
•No odor dry erase marker

Grading policy

•Major grades (test, quizzes and projects) will count as 75% percent of the
students’ total grade.

•Homework/Daily work/Participation will count as the remaining 25% of the
students’ total grade.

Tutorials
Tutorials will take place every day before or after school. Please note that
students must give me advance notice if they will be attending tutorials.

Homework
Homework will be assigned on a regular basis. In addition to written
homework, I strongly suggest that students study vocabulary and grammar
concepts on a daily basis. This is where the flash cards come in handy. By
simply going through the flash cards students will see a significant
improvement and prevent cramming for test and quizzes.

Make-up Work Policy
Students who are absent will be responsible for all missed work. They will
have five school days to complete missed work, make-up test and quizzes for
full credit. If you miss a test or quiz; you must make it up before or after
school.

Late Work Policy
Students should turn in work on time. Should an assignment be turned in late;
10 points will be deducted each day that the assignment is late. Missing
assignments will be counted as a 50 until completed.

Note: I am in the process of working on this webpage for my Spanish classes.
The website will allow parent and student to see what we are working on in
class. I will do my best to update my webpage on a regular basis.

Guidelines for Success
•Have an open mind.
•Be attentive in class: Listen, participate, and ask questions.
•Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
•Develop a study schedule.
•Complete all class work and assignments. (Practice makes perfect.)
•Be on time to class, prepared and ready to learn.
•Give your very best effort everyday.

I am looking forward to working with you. My goal is to guide each student on
learning the required curriculum while having a positive learning experience
and excellent class results.

Thank you,
Señora Cordova
