Each year, fourth-grade teachers nominate four students from their
classrooms to go through peer mediation training. This begins in the spring
of their fourth-grade year and training is completed by October of their
fifth-grade year. These peer mediators, or conflict managers, help other
students solve their problems by following a proven and researched based
conflict resolution model.
They meet with their peers during lunch, under the supervision of the
counselor. This program build tremendous leadership skills. Last year the
peer mediators were instrumental in achieving Double File Trail's goal of
becoming an Anti Defamation League's recognized "No Place For Hate" campus.
In the 2009-2010 school year, 17 fifth grade students will complete their
training, and are very excited to begin their positions as conflict managers.
