Tuesday, November 4, 2008, 5th grade Quest students are taking a one-day
trip to Dallas to participate in “A Little Washington in Big D.” Buses will
depart from DIS* at 7:30 AM and return at approximately 6:30 PM. The cost
for students and chaperones is $68.00 per person. Students and chaperones
will each need to bring a drink, sack lunch, personal snacks and, if
desired, money for souvenirs.
(*DIS and EIS will be co-participating in this field trip. DIS is the bus
departure and return location. DIS buses will be on the south side of the
building; EIS buses on the west side of the building.)
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION—ALIGNED WITH 5TH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES TEKS
During this activity-packed visit to the Dallas County Commissioners Court,
Sixth Floor Museum and the Old Red Museum students will: explore the
framework of the three branches of government created by the United States
Constitution, experience the importance of individual participation in the
democratic process, learn about JFK’s accomplishments and the importance of
effective leadership in a democratic society, participate in a mock trial in
an actual courtroom, and view exhibits illustrating the relationship between
art and the times during which they were created.
The $68.00 field trip price includes:
• TEKS-based pre-, during- and post-program activities
• Pre-program curriculum training for each participating teacher and
chaperone
• TEKS-based curriculum journal for each participant
• Round-trip charter bus transportation from DIS
• T-shirt for each student, teacher and chaperone
► Please complete and return the student waivers that will come home with
students this week and return to Ms. Hoag with the required $68.00
by October 8, 2008. Please make checks payable to DIS. [Parents of any
students who need assistance with payment: please write a confidential note
to Ms. Hoag or Counselor Lehrer. No one will be excluded for financial
reasons.]
► For this trip, we will require one chaperone for every ten students. If
you wish to be a chaperone, please complete and return the bottom of the
field trip information form to Ms. Hoag by October 8, 2008. A drawing will
be held to determine chaperones and you will be notified with details if
your name is drawn. Chaperones will be required to participate in a 1½-hour
training session on October 29 at EIS*, sign a contract, pass a background
check, and travel on buses departing and returning to DIS*.
