Fifth Grade Art Class Fifth grade students attend art three times every other week. Throughout the year they will have the opportunity to learn to use a variety of materials with projects in drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. In fifth grade an emphasis is placed on developing drawing skills. Developing confidence, taking pride in artwork, and gaining an appreciation for different kinds of art are also goals for each student. Students are exposed to art history through lessons that are taught with a focus on a particular artist or art style. TEKS Perception: Develop and organize ideas from the environment 5.1A Communicate personal ideas using senses and life experience 5.1B Identify Elements and Principles of art Creative Expression: Express ideas in art through media and skills 5.2A Use information from direct observation, personal experience, and imagination to express ideas about self, family, and community 5.2B Compare relationships between design and everyday life 5.2C Create artwork and explore photographic imagery using materials and media appropriately Historic/Cultural Heritage: Art and Culture are a record of human achievement 5.3A Compare artwork from several national periods and find similarities and differences. 5.3B Cultural themes honoring history and traditions in America and other art 5.3C Identify art skills in a variety of jobs Response/Evaluation: Informed judgments about personal and others’ artwork 5.4A Analyze personal artwork to interpret meaning 5.4B Analyze peer artwork to form conclusions Sixth Grade Art Class Sixth grade students attend art twice a week if they are not in band. In this second year of intermediate school art, they further develop their ability to use materials with a greater focus on self expression. Projects are designed to give students opportunity to express ideas that are important to them, while still learning art history and appropriate use of art media. TEKS Perception: Develop and organize ideas from the environment 6.1A Illustrate themes from direct observation, personal experience, and tradition 6.1B General understanding of interdependence of elements and principles, using vocabulary appropriately Creative Expression: Express ideas through art using media and skills 6.2A Variety of ideas based on personal experience and direct observation 6.2B Describe in detail application for design ideas 6.2C Demonstrate technical skills in variety of media Historic/Cultural Heritage: Art and culture as the records of human achievement 6.3A Identify influences of historical and political events 6.3B Compare art from a variety of cultures 6.3C Compare career and avocational opportunities in art Response/Evaluation: Informed judgments about personal and others’ artwork 6.4A In-progress analyses/critiques of personal artwork 6.4B Peer evaluation of artwork about formal properties and historical/cultural contexts.
