 Mrs. Gilbert's LA Page

Congratulations to my homeroom -

GREEN OUT WINNERS for 2008!!!

You rock!

Welcome to my web page! Below you will find lots of great information and resources to help make this a successful and fun year in 5th grade LA. Please click on words and pictures below to access information for each of the LA subject areas, plus helpful websites and extra resources.

READING

STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE LITERARY ELEMENTS FLASHCARDS COMPLETE BY TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14TH (I WILL CHECK THEM FOR A DAILY GRADE).

THE LITERARY ELEMENTS TEST IS THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16TH.

It is now the second six weeks! Students will be reading a book and then creating a visual project. Specific requirements for the Realistic Fiction book report for this six weeks are attached below. General information and due dates are attached to this website as well.

We still have some copies of our new novel, THE KID WHO RAN FOR PRESIDENT available for purchase in the library.

All students should have now brought in THE KID WHO RAN FOR PRESIDENT novel. Please place your child's name in the book.

Students will be purchasing two novels this year. One in the Fall and one in the Spring. The cost is $6.50 for this first book. We will sell the second book later this year.

When students have their own copy of the book, we are able to teach them to annotate(make notations in the margins) and highlight important information properly and the entire 5th grade is able to read the same book at the same time. We, of course will be tying it in with the election this Fall. We plan to incorporate many Non-Fiction news articles related to our current Presidential election as a tie in to the book.

SPELLING

Spelling Packet is due Thursday, October 16th. Spelling Test #7 is Friday, October 17th.

We will not be doing Unit #6 as it is a Review Unit.

GRAMMAR

NOUN UNIT TEST WAS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3RD. We are now beginning the VERB UNIT. If your child still needs help with NOUNS, he/she should come to tutoring on Monday or Thursday at 8:05 a.m. It is important that the students master each part of speech so that it is easier to put it all together as we learn new concepts.
