We wrapped up our unit on cycles (nitrogen, oxygen/carbon dioxide, water,
life) and started a study session on our class wiki.
The cycles test will be tomorrow, and it will be open journal. Notes,
diagrams, etc. that we've been working on need to be in the journal in order
to use them.
Students should go online tonight if possible and participate in the science
discussions in the Tech Support - Science section of the wiki. Also, all the
cycles movies are on my webpage for review.
Math:
We went over the factors test today and then began fractions. HW:
pg 170 in textbook (4-9, 10-13, 16&17) Due Fri 11/20
L/A:
We finished our weekly rotations and read aloud from Among the Hidden. HW:
finish reading and taking notes for Ch-2 & 3.

HW: Finish the rough draft (clean, legible, accurate) of the family tree we

We're tying this in to Among the Hidden, and answering this question:

was a Population Law in effect (like in Among the Hidden) that prohibits

Re-read chapter 1 of Among the Hidden, and add the post-it notes for the
following thematic elements: conflict, characters, setting, and theme. I
modeled this today in class and the students have a graphic organizer to use
as they read tonight. We'll work on Ch 2 tomorrow.
SS:
No HW! We played on online webquest involving establishing a colony.
Tomorrow, we'll finish taking notes on the original 13 colonies, and then
start a unit covering colonial era slavery.

Today we started a project that ties into our ongoing "Colony Game."
Students are as a group, designing a futuristic spaceship capable of
sustaining not only humans, but whole biomes and habitats that can support a
variety of flora and fauna. We'll be spending a lot of time tomorrow working
on this also.

Math:
Today we looked at the HW and found some patterns (primes, composites,
squares) and discussed some general rules regarding them, and what they could
expect to see in middle school level math.
For tonight's HW:
Find a)all the factors and b)all of the prime factors of the following
numbers:
8, 18, 24, 25, 30
Use the "UT" method to find all of the factors for a number, and
the "Christmas Tree" method for prime factoring. The notes and example of
these are already on the paper that the students will use for the HW so they
can use them as a reference if they need to.

class time today and yesterday to work on this.

No HW. We finished up our rotations and students had the remainder of the
time to work on math (my class and TAG) or social studies.

No HW! Today we finished discussion, notes, and streaming video of plant life
cycles. Students should have their life cycles worksheet in the science
section of their accordian files. We will be using it to make a life cycle
diagram tomorrow.
Math:
We graded reviewed the division review that was HW last night, and the HW
tonight is to correct and check (using multiplication and adding any
remainders) all problems missed. If that is done, students will receive a +5%
on the test tomorrow. Students received a 100% will also get the extra points
if they bring in their review tomorrow.
HW: correct and check any missed problems problems on division review. Study
for test tomorrow.

Today we worked on the CH-6 reading notes in the History Alive
textbook/workbook. We also started a streaming video over the 3 early North
American settlements of Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth. This movie is
available on the Social Studies Videos page, the one on the bottom.
Tomorrow morning is the last chance to work on the Ch-6 notes and finish up
units 6 thru 9 in the atlas. We will be checking them tomorrow during social
studies.

No HW! We started life cycles today, took some notes from a discussion and
movie (see science movies page) and started a life cycles activity. Students
can continue to color (but not cut out yet!) the animals on the life cycles
worksheet.
Math:
Do the 10 question assessment review packet. We did some fairly challenging
division problems today, so tonight's assignment (should) be a piece of cake.
Due Tuesday 11/3.
L/A:
No HW! We started our introduction to research unit today, and will be doing
this for the next few weeks, in addition to our regular rotations and reading
assignments.
SS:
No HW! We began our North American colonies unit today, and students are
working on taking notes from Ch-6 of the History Alive textbook. This was not
assigned for HW, but students may continue to work on this if they have time.
It will be due at the end of social studies tomorrow.

Today we combined our knowledge of biomes and food chains...we worked on
creating food chain for each biome (desert, salt water, fresh water, tropical
rain forest, tundra, grassland, forest [deciduous/coniferous]).
Students started rough drafts today (45 min in class + 30 mins. during indoor
recess/optional) and a final copy will be due at the end of science tomorrow.
They used notes, textbooks, classroom books, and my online resources.

Tuesday 10/20:
Sci:
Today we finished taking notes from the Food Chains/Webs movie, and started
2 in class activities. Students are using info from the movies to create and
label and food chain & web, with appropriate labes (producer, consumer, etc.)
as well as providing arrows in the proper direction to show the transfer of
energy from one organism to another.
The food chain/web assignment will be due Thur 10/22.
Math:
We went over a few problems from HW and then began a game
called "Divisibility Wars" that pitted 2 students against each other
to identify if various numbers were divisible by 2,3,4,5,6,9,& 10.
Tomorrow we will finish up the game. No HW tonight!
L/A:
We practiced something new to my class today! I've developed stations that
focus spelling, grammar, guided reading, and library time. Students are in
groups and for 20 mins. from Mon-Thur, they cycle through and do 1 station
per day.
While in the grammar and spelling stations, students can work together to
solve the problems and then see me when they are finished to score their
work. The guided reading station is with me, and we cover various reading
strategies and skills, and for the library station, students can use this for
additional silent reading time, check out/return/renew books, and -- when we
get to it -- research.
Update:
Since we have an assembly before the field trip on Friday which will cut into
our class time in the morning, I will not be giving the 10 question Sci.
Studies Weekly quiz on Friday. Instead, I will distribute them to the
students tomorrow and we will work on them in class and they can take the
home. This will be a good way to work on what to expect for future quizzes.
S.S.:
We've started an open book test over explorers and mapping concepts
yesterday, and we continued today during intervention time and in social
studies today. This test will be due Wed 10/21

HW: Using the dividends (the number being divided) from pg. 103 of the
textbook, find the digit sum and check divisibility of the 1st 13 problems.

We spent about 15 minutes in class working on this HW, either individually or
with a partner.

I handed out and read from our 1st weekly installment of our Science Weekly
Reader newspaper. Students also read indvidually or with a partner for about
10 minutes in class. We will have an "open newspaper" quiz on Friday over the
articles. Students should read over the articles both at school and at home.
S.S.:
We started an open book unit test today covering exploration and map terms,
including finding latitude and longitude. Students will have time to continue
to work on this during interventions in the mornging (7:45 - 8:30 am), during
study hall, and social studies. Whatever is not finished will be taken home
for HW and due this Wed.

Finish up the online graphic organized that we worked on today in class.
Using the same independent reading novel as the last set of independent
reading activities, students today had 45 min on laptops to work on filling
out graphic organizers releated to various text elements, such as conflict
and setting.
Most students got through the first 2 pages (out of 4) and printed out what
they completed. HW this weekend is to finish and print the remaining pages.

- Finish Place Value Practice worksheet. Write the numbers used on the
worksheet in the place value charts we glued into our math composition
book.

- Biopoem must be completed, typed and turned in no later than 11:00 tomorrow
morning.

Monday Aug 31:
Social Studies: Due Tues. 9/1
- Finish the "Roman Empire 117 A.D." Map. Answer all questions and carefully
color the map. This was started today in class.
There is another map ("Economic Life of the Roman Empire") that students may
work on/color tonight as well, but it is optional. We'll work on that one
tomorrow in class.
Math: Due Tues. 9/1
- Finish filling in "Problem-Solving Recording Sheet" with the info from the
math textbook pg xi (11)
- Attempt to make a table based on the info from the example problem/strategy
#2 "Make a Table" that we cut and pasted today.
These should both be in the math notes/composition book that we started today.
L/A: No HW!
Today we worked on cutting out pictures that illustrate the biopoems that we
wrote last week. Students may find more magazines or cut out more pictures
tonight at home, but this is optional. We will work on them more tomorrow
during class.
Science: No HW!
We are working in class on lab safety concepts/procedures.
