Using Social Studies to Enhance Novel Studies
I spent 11 years teaching HS English before moving to the land of the little
people, aka elementary school. :) I discovered that in order to get the most
out of my novel studies my students needed to know what was happening when
the novel was written or when it took place. My father is a HS History
teacher so I spent my entire life vacationing to historical places. I
discovered that once you knew history...everything else fell into place.
Inventions, literature, politics, theatre. Some historical event inspired
the greats of our times. :) Having kids make that connection helps them
understand the novel, the characters, and the settings. So for everyone who
did not have the luxury of spending every summer at a battle field,
I'vecreated some user friendly units to help you get started. :)
