Flexible Access

Fern Bluff operates a "Flexible Access" library. In this
environment we are able to accommodate the many diverse needs of our
patrons. In our "Flexible Access" library you may see an entire class
researching a project in the main library area. In the "Bobcat Den" the
librarian may be conducting literature appreciation activities. On the
technology rug students may be interacting with RRISD databases or author
websites or other technology-based motivational presentations to promote
reading and research. All the while other students are browsing the shelves,
using "e-library", the online catalog, to find that "Just Right" or "Good
Fit" book.

Teachers may bring their whole class for book check out as well
as send students on library passes on an individual basis as needed for
check out or research. Teachers often pop in during their planning time to
pick up a book for a lesson or to restock the reading area of their
classrooms. Some times are hectic and some times are calm, but no two times
are exactly the same.

Collaboration between staff and teachers is our focus to promote maximum
student achievement! Teachers and the librarian plan lessons and schedules
together. The library staff provides a variety of resources for teachers to
support instruction.

It is exciting to see students locating those "Good Fit" books
independently, using technology to access information, searching for books
by a newly discovered author, and empowered to chose books that appeal to
their personal interests.
