Dear Parents,
The big news in second grade this week is that our reading bins arrived in
the mail. Now the kids will have their own special place to keep their "just
right books". We will begin our days with independent reading and then spend
time reading and doing reading work with a partner. At the end of the day,
the kids will get to bring home a book from their book bin that they would
like to read that evening. They will come home in a large Ziplock bag.
Please send the book back the very next day. That way, if they are in the
middle of a chapter book, they can continue to read and enjoy it.
These are my personal books and the kids know how much I love my books
so I am sure that they will be taken care of. We will sign the books out so
I will have a record of which book is at home. I have rearranged the
classroom so my entire book collection is more reachable so the kids will
have a wide range of books to choose from.
The cutest thing that happened this week was when I caught Adi and
Sophia making their kindergarten buddies make predictions about the books
they were reading to them! I said, "Girls, what are you doing?" They
said, "We saw your lesson plans and we are making predictions!" They had
found the notes that I had written to myself about the book they were reading
and decided to follow through on my plans! I have such wonderful readers!
In math, we have just finished our money unit. Next week we begin
perimeter and we will pre-test for our big unit on time. So this would be a
wonderful time to think about getting your child a watch so that they can
practice all day long! Learning to tell time is a big skill and it takes
practice.
I spent the morning having writing conferences with my writers. They
are doing a fabulous job writing narratives. After we rewrite the leads next
week, I will be asking some parent volunteers to help me "publish" them. I
really appreciate my 6 parent typers! The kids will be so excited to see
their stories in print.
Our Thanksgiving show will be Monday, November 23rd at 9:00 AM. We will
have hot apple cider, cinnamon rolls, fruit and some fun together. I always
look forward so much to this time of year. The kids are going to put on a
Thanksgiving play and sing songs for all of you. Don't forget the zoo field
trip which is next Wednesday! I'll send out a reminder note next week.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Mrs. Carneiro
