Dear Parents,
A big cold front has just blown in! Boy is it cold outside. Please bundle
up your children before sending them to school. I really appreciate the
healthy snacks that you continue to send. We need a piece of fruit, whole
grain crackers and food that will give us energy at our recess break time.
Please do not send dessert for a snack.
We have started a big unit in math! We are learning to tell time. It
is a very important skill and the kids are enjoying their math. Ask your
child who their math teacher is and what kind of strategies they are learning
about telling time. Watches make wonderful Christmas gifts for second
graders!
We are writing circle stories this week modeled after Laura Numeroff's
book "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie". The children are working in groups to
create books and then they will also be writing their very own version at the
end of the week.
The big cookie election is coming up in second grade. This is a
wonderful way to learn about government and how we elect our leaders. We
will discuss what qualities we want our leaders to have. We will also pick a
cookie to campaign for and learn how to write persuasively so others will
want to support our "cookie". This is such a fun way to learn about
government.
We will continue to spend a good deal of time choosing books that we
love and bringing books home to read. The children can bring a different
book home each night if they wish to take a chapter book back and forth. A
lot of kids are telling me they are spending more time reading now that they
are allowed to take home books from their new reading bins! I am so thrilled
about this.
I hope you can each find a little bit of peace in each day!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Carneiro
