Homework

Update: Please make sure to check over your child's homework trackers. It
is to be a "final copy". It should not be the child's first draft. Please
have your child use a pencil so that corrections can be made. Also, I
recommend the first draft be on a piece of scratch paper. Please ask your
child to do a variety of responses. I would prefer a different type of
response each night. I greatly appreciate all of the help and care that you
give regarding your child's homework. I enjoy reading their trackers and am
pleased with some of the great book choices being made.

Dear Parents,

We have begun spelling. We have two groups, the Ridley Sea Turtles and the
Leatherbacks. They are all wonderful turtles but may learn differently. If
your child likes to work on the computer, just go to SpellingCity.com and
type in your child's list. They can play games and practice their words for
the week. If you feel spelling is especially difficult for your child, I
recommend making it a "multi-sensory" experience. You can use shaving cream
and have them spell words into it. You can put sandpaper under paper, write
the words over the paper with crayon and then have your child feel the bumps
to practice their words. Some kids respond better to music. Some do better
if they have to spell the word using their entire arm and writing it in the
air. Others like to manipulate magnetic letters to practice. We will try
some different methods at school and try some at home too. I would like
everyone to practice a little each day so that they can feel successful at
school. The spelling tests will be each Thursday. New lists will always be
in the homework folder. If I can not get the list into the folder on time, I
will post a list for each group right here on my website. Have fun
practicing. I will directly teach letter "chunks" that are common in many
words to the children who need this instruction. This will not only improve
their writing and spelling but their reading as well.
Thanks so much for working with your child at home.
