10/5-10/9
This has been a couple of busy weeks for me with preparing for parent conferences.
Hopefully I can continue to say on track with my postings and keep you informed
about our activities.
First let me thank all of you who were able to attend our conference night.
It was wonderful to be able to share your student's work with you and
answer the questions that you had. If you still have questions about your child's
progress or suggestions requarding how we could improve the conference
in the future please feel free to email or phone.
We are moving right along through our curriculum.
In Language arts have added adjectives to our list of parts of speech while continuing
to look for nouns, verbs, appropriate placing of periods and capitals, and complete
sentences in our own writing
We will continue working on improving handwriting during handwriting lessons and
spelling and language practice sessions.
Everyone is working in their draft books during Writers Workshop and creating
personal stories. Some students have several stories to choose from to publish.
As these are completed they will come home in Tuesday folders.
We have talked about using our imagination to create story ideas that are stimulated
by the 'What If?' question.
In Science we have ended the body systems unit.
We have begun our maps unit beginning with learning about urban, suburban and rural
communities and their varying characteristics. This coming week we will focus on careers
and job opportunites in our communities as well and needs, wants, goods and services.
We are excited about our first chance to become experts as we learn about a career
and prepare to share it with the class on CAREER DAY this Thursday.
In math we have introduced counting up, counting down, finding the unknown part, using
the numberline, and comparing as a variety of strategies to aid in problem solving.
FRIDAY IS FIELD DAY The P.E. department has requested that students wear super
hero costumes. The first grade teachers are concerned for your child’s safety, bathroom
needs, and overall comfort. Please have your child wear our blue Class Shirt on this day
instead if a super hero costume. We don’t want costumes to end up lost, stolen or broken and
this makes it much easier to identify our class as we move through the stations that day.
Thanks so much for your help.
