10/2/09 Read Daily (20mins+) and Response. Spelling homework will begin next week. See Production Notes section for more info on spelling. I strongly recommend that you practice with your child addition and subtraction facts to 20. By the end of 2nd grade, your child should be able to mentally recall and solve these math facts. I have already seen great improvement in several students since the beginning of the year. So keep up the good work. If you want your child to work on math this week, we have been working on our doubles facts. You can use the "Doubles Dice Game" located in the handout/printables section of my website. Weather forecast for this weekend is rain. So its a perfect time to snuggle up with your child and a great book. Have a great weekend.
9/25/09 Reading and Writing: read daily and write a summary of one of the books you read this week.
Additional hmwk: practice kinder and 1st grade missed words (list was sent home a few weeks ago) you can also find the complete list here (Kinder and First Core Words). Spellingcity.com is a fun site to practice spelling words. For extra math help, check out the FBE weblinks
9/18/09 Reading and Writing: pick one book you read this week and write a short description of what it's about*.
Additional Hmwk: 2 math pages.
*We corrected a typo in the reading recording sheet. I informed my students that they can write their summary any day of the week.
9/11/09 Homework is coming home today. Look for it in a light blue folder. Inside the folder you will find a few pages in the brads. Each page has 2 identical forms on each side. Your child will only need to fill out one form each week. This week they will only fill out the top portion on the first page. The boxes in the top are for you to record how many minutes they chose to read (or you chose for them to read) each day. Their plan of action is to read at least 20 minutes each day (the same amount of time that I give them each day in class to read independently). Your child will only grow stronger as a reader if they read daily (20 minutes is considered a standard amount of time for homework for a 2nd grader). All I ask is for students and parents to be honest about the minutes. I have found in the past that if I made it a requirement that students HAD to read for 20 minutes daily, parents would sometimes just lie for their child and say they did. If your child is not reading a lot at home, then I will be able to know that and try to spend some extra time (if time permits) to work with them a little more with their reading. In the pocket of the homework folder you will find 2 letters and a handout with the Top 5 Reading Strategies that we worked with all week.
If your child wants to practice his/her math, spelling, grammar, etc. then check out the WEB LINKS on my website.
8/31/09 No homework this week. Strongly encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes a day. I have found that if you want your child to sit down and read, then model for them and sit down and read for 20 minutes yourself. Child will have a difficult time concentrating on reading if a family member is watching tv, playing video games, etc. If you want your child to become a successful reader, then you need to help them by providing a pleasant and quiet environment to do so.
8/28/09 Our Homework Folders are a light baby blue color. I have sent them home today because there is a page (front and back) that I want my students to fill out this weekend that will tell me a little bit more about them. This week we focused on ourselves and what makes us who we are. Your child's Homework Folder will be coming home on Fridays and will be returned on Thursdays. If you have any questions throughout the year about any homework assignment, then post it on the parent blog (helps me reduce answering the same question 20 times) or have your child ask me before Thursday of course.
