S.M.A.R.T.
(Start Meeting And Reading Together)
A new program introduced in 2008-09 by the Texas PTA in honor of the 100th
year Celebration!
Read Aloud Tips and Questions
Remember only ask questions based on
your children's interests and age level.
Questions before reading :
Introduce the author of the book
through discussion.
Remember how much we enjoyed ________
by this author? Do you remember what we liked about that story? Here’s another
book by him/her. Let’s read this one and see if we like it as well as the
other book we read.
Show the cover of the book. Ask
children what they think the title might be and what the story will be about.
Discuss what they know about the topic.
Provide information about the
setting, characters, and where the story takes place.
Questions during reading:
Ask your children to name objects in
the story.
Have your child predict what will
happen next.
Ask them what they think about the
character.
Why do you think the author used that
word?
What part of the story helped you
predict the ending?
What makes him or her a character you
like?
Ask your child why he or she thinks a
character acted in a certain way.
Does this story remind you of any
other story you've read?
Help your child summarize a story
using these five questions:
Who or what is the story about?
What happens first, next, and how
does the story end?
