Dear First Grade Families,

Greetings! This week in writing we continue to focus on editing, spelling and punctuation.  In reading we are learning how to retell the order of events.  We may do this using our five fingers, or by discussing the beginning, middle and ending of stories we read.  In math we are revisiting the concept of measuring using nonstandard units (paperclips or cubes).  In science we are beginning a unit on properties and patterns of objects as well as change in size, color and quantity.  In this unit we will learn these concepts through the study of solids and liquids.

Your child may ask you for help finding solids and liquids at home. You’ll want to discuss and compare the different characteristics of those you find. (For example, how are salt and sugar the same? How are they different?) You may find yourself observing what happens when solids and liquids are put together. Making lemonade or salad dressing can provide interesting observations when solids and liquids are mixed. Watching an ice cube melt is a way to observe a solid change to a liquid.

A few exciting things this week are:

* Early release on Wednesday (12:45 p.m.)

            * Valograms for purchase all week in the cafeteria!

            * Valentine’s Day Party on Friday (1:45)We'd love for you to join us. Please stop in. If you are unable to help out on that day, please consider donating food/goodies for the party. I have listed the students names at the bottom of this post for you. Please be sure to send enough Valentine's cards for everybody in the class. We'll be making the holder at school.

Also, please be sure your child is completing his/her math homework each week and returning it by Friday. Home readers and planners need to be signed every night and returned each day. As we prepare for second grade it is even more important to instill a sense of responsibility in your children. Those students who consistently miss turning in planners/home readers/homework will begin to receive consequences (time out during recess).

Thank you so much for your continued support in the growth and learning of your child. Please do not hesitate to call or email me if you ever have a comment, question or concern. I love to hear about how the children are bringing their learning home with them and sharing it with their families!

Sincerely,

Mary Meyer
