Hello, families! With only 9 more weeks to go, things are heating up in 2nd grade. Here is a look at our current units of study...Reading - We have been reading texts and other media to determine the author's purpose - persuade, inform or entertain. We have learned that authors can give us a lot of different types of information, that authors use specific features to persuade and that sometimes texts can have more than one purpose. We are continuing to work on determining the main idea of a text, summarizing text using the SWBST or 5Ws strategy and recording our thinking about a text using our strategy codes. Writing - We have been exploring persuasive reviews and determining the features, purpose and content of these reviews. We are going to use what we learned from our mentor reviews and apply that learning to writing our own reviews. Next week we will write persuasive letters. We are always working to develop our ideas through elaboration, to organize our ideas, to make sure our ideas "flow" and to inject voice and exciting words into our writing all while writing with attention to capitalization, punctuation and spelling. Whew! that's a lot of work!Math - We are learning about flat (2D) shapes and solid (3D) shapes. We are learning to name the shapes, describe it's attributes and to compare two shapes to one another. We are also learning that you can cut shapes apart to make new shapes. We noticed that shapes are all around us and make up our wonderful world. Social Studies - We are studying the science of economics. So far we have learned that people are either producers or consumers, that they produce or consume goods or services, and that those goods and services are either needs or wants. We are also examining the development of a product from a natural resource to a finished product. We will be creating flow charts to illustrate this process for a variety of goods. We will also develop a business plan to provide goods or services to our fellow 2nd graders and will have a 2nd Grade Super Mall business fair toward the middle of April. Just a few announcements...Report cards come home on Thursday. Please read through it carefully and sign and return the envelope. If you'd like to schedule a conference to discuss your child's academic progress, please email me. We will be scheduling conferences for all students at the beginning of May, but I am happy to meet with you before then. I am available Monday and Friday afternoons and most mornings before school from 7:20 - 7:40. As the weather begins to warm, please feel free to send your child with a water bottle to school. It is important to stay hydrated! Please only send water, not juice or sodas. Please also remember that even though it is warm outside, our room can be quite cold at times. Please send your child with a light jacket to keep in his or her backpack just in case! Finally, I am trying out a new web tool that I think is pretty cool. I am going to show it to the kids later this week. It is a visual bookmarks tool called symbaloo. I am adding it to the links page on this website. I am hoping it will be an easier (for me!) and more fun way to share websites with you and the kids. Let me know what you think!Have a great week!Sincerely,Jenni Rhea
