September 29-October 3
Welcome back after Ike! It was great to be back in school and doing something normal after
two weeks of Ike. I hope you all fared well with little upheaval and damage. My family lost a
big tree and lots of limbs, a couple of car windows and a refrigerator, but we considered ourselves
very fortunate. It made for a lot of good family togetherness picking up yard trash
and being in the dark for 9 days, too.
Look in your child's Friday folder for a yellow card-stock packet of word wall words for this
nine weeks. You can cut them apart and practice, as we get to each set of words. We've already
covered the first ten words. We'll do 5 a week.
This week:
Phonics: short u and short e (hen, bed, rug, gum) - There will not be a spelling list. All First
Grade teachers will teach phonics patterns instead. If your child
learns the pattern for the week, he or she will do well on the spelling quiz
each Friday. Each week we will generate a list of words using the current
pattern. These lists usually come home on the first or second school day of
that week. Look for your child's pattern list in the BEE binder.
Word Wall Words: said, she, of, are, get
These are words that are to be learned so that your child will recognize them
in reading texts. They are frequently encountered words. Each week last week's
words will be posted on our Word Wall and left up for the remainder of the year.
I call it our dictionary wall.
Math: Numbers to 10 (ordering, least, greatest), calendar activities
Social Studies/Science: Communities/Landforms
This year we have P.E. every other day. P.E. is on Monday, Wednesday and Friday
this week. To make it simple, you can put an old pair of tennis shoes in your child's
backpack to have at school at all times. That way we will be ready for P.E.
Our lunch time is 11:34-12:04. You are welcome to eat with your child. Just sign
in at the office and wait on the stage area next to the cafeteria. We're the first table
closest to the back wall, just inside the door.
