| A Beginning Year Focus For 2008-09
Dear Parents,
Hi, my name is Mrs. Steele and I am the reading intervention teacher
for Kindergarten, First Grade and Dyslexia reading specialist K-3. During
the first 4-6 weeks of school, I will be visiting all K-1 classrooms
assisting teachers and observing or helping students in their classroom. I
also assist dyslexic students in Gr.1-3. In this first 9 week's period I
will be gathering academic information and helping many students adjust to
their new classroom and school expectations. I will review the Kindergarten
Screenings and the beginning of the year DRA 2/PAPI assessments that
will be done in Septemeber on all Cline students by your child's
classroom teacher. I will also consult with your child's teacher often,
to discuss these assessment results and discuss successful strategies that
can be used in the classroom. I can help target areas identified on these
assessments. For example, this month I am providing classroom materials and
giving "quick phonics screenings" to help assess students with their
development of "phonological, phonemic awareness, and phonics skills".
Please check out the Cline Reading Connections table in the hallway where we
are happy to share home materials, provide suggestions and information for
home practice on these specific skills which are the "greatest predictors of
reading success". Later in September, struggling students and their
intervention needs will be discussed and a detailed plan of intervention and
target areas will be focused on. At that time, I will send home a parent
permission form if you want your child to participate in the K.I.P.
(Kindergarten Intervention Program), S.R.P.(Supplemental Reading Program) or
Dyslexia Program. If you have concerns about your child's progress,
assessment results or feel you have important confidential
information to share about your child, please feel free to contact the
counselor, Mrs. Bowman or myself,(Mrs. Steele) by phone at #281-482-1201
ext.#304 or email me at: jsteele@fisdk12.net
I strongly encourage you to first contact your child's teacher but
feel assured, Mrs. Bowman or I will be available to help answer questions,
as well as, be a resource to helping your child in his classroom. Please
provide me time to answer your call or email since I have 7 class periods
and may have to wait until 2:35 before I can return your call/email. It may
be necessary for us to meet or talk by phone during this first 9 weeks
period and during the school year, to discuss your child's response to
classroom interventions or response to a pulled-out (regular education)
program such as KIP, SRP, or Dyslexia. At Cline,"early intervention" and
providing opportunities for parent connections are foremost our goal for
your child's reading success.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Julia C. Steele
