Subject Information

In October, we find ourselves "falling into great work"...

READING:
**Once you have received your child's DRA score and can tell where your child
stands in Second grade in reading. You can help your child succeed in
reading fluently by reading aloud with them for about 15 minutes each night! Ask your child what
they have read. This works on comprehension.
**We will sometimes be working in reading group books and sometimes as a
whole group on stories this month. Some students will be reading a story
and some will be in a chapter book.

MATH

**We will be working on memorizing our math facts (addition and subtraction)
up to 18. Please remember to work on math facts each night for at least 5-
10 minutes. You can do this by using flash cards, playing board
games, playing computer programs, rolling dice, etc.
**We will be taking math fact timed tests each Tuesday and Thursday. Each
progression of test color targets a different level of math fact. The progression of
colors go from red (facts to 5), to purple (facts to 8), to brown (facts to 10), to orange (facts
to 14) and , then, to green (facts to 18). Starting the second nine weeks, one timed test will be
graded each week. This test will be taken on Thursday . All students will be
given the same test and time for Thursday's test. We will start with a red 10 minute
and progress each week to the next color (purple, brown, orange, and green). The third
nine weeks, we will progress through the same colors each week at 7 minutes. The last nine
weeks, we will progress through the same colors each week, but at 5 minutes.
Please practice at home for extra help!
**WE will enrich our math by writing and solving a word problem each day!
Problem solving is a way of thinking and reasoning. It can be connected to
the real world by solving problems at home, as well. Have your child try to
add the total at the grocery store or clothing store, do some cooking
activities, measure things around the house, etc!! Have fun!! Math is fun!!

LANGUAGE

**We will be working on writing complete sentences at the
beginning of the year. This will progress to writing a paragraph.
**We will learn what a noun is and how to identify a noun in a sentence. Please remind
your child to always begin each sentence with a capital letter and end the
sentence with correct punctuation when writing.
**Most of our writing this year will be tied to our literature that we will
be reading. One of the Language grades will be taken from your child's
sentence dictation test each week. These sentences will have their spelling
words in them. Again, PLEASE remind your child to ALWAYS start a sentence
with a capital and end it with punctuation.

SPELLING
**Spelling will have a weekly list of words coming home on Mondays. Tuesday
will have some kind of homework assignment to practice these words. The
spelling test will be a little different in that we will not just call out
words. In order for us to see if the child is truly LEARNING the spelling
of a word and not just memorizing for the test, the words will be used in
sentences. This is called our sentence dictation test which will be on
Thursdays. We will practice the words in class. However, it is very
important for many of the children to receive additional help each night.
Each child will still need to have time to study those spelling words every
night.

SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE
**In Science we will be starting Unit A2 which discusses how animals grow and change.

HANDWRITING
**We will be looking at our print handwriting and working to correct common errors made.
**PLEASE do not try to teach your child cursive at home as habits are hard to
break! Thank
you for your cooperation!

I am looking forward to an awesome year!
Your children are wonderful blessings...thank you for sharing them with me!
