We started January in the library by telling about the history of mystery writing and then "booktalking"
mysteries for all levels, from the legend of the Loch Ness Monster to Nancy Drew.
Respect for our environment was incorporated into the kindergarten story, "Waiting for Wings".
Fairness to friends was shown in "Franklin's Reading Club" for first grade. Second grade looked at the
different parts of a book and third grade showed responsibiity for finding books by using the Dewey
Decimal System to find nonfiction books.
Later in the month, kindergarten again learned about respect for our environment by listening to the
nonfiction story of the red-eyed tree frog. First graders learned where art books are shelved and heard
a story from that section. Second grade listened to "Professor Parrot Speaks Spanish" and reviewed
where the foreign language books are located as part of showing respect for other cultures. Third
graders heard selections from "The Secret Knowledge of Grownups" (one of their favorites) and were
reminded of the location and content of the 800's.
During February, kindergarten classes will hear a story about guessing who a community worker is from
the tools they use, first graders will listen to folk rhymes, second graders will learn how biographies are
filed, and third graders will try to guess answers from a book containing rhyming word games.
Everyone will be watching or hearing stories and poems about valentines and later there will be
different stories and lessons about using the library and solving riddles.
Books significant to Black History Month will be on special display during February.
