Third grade students are learning about the musical form known as opera and
music terms that go with the form of opera. Some of the terms we are learning
are the names of the voices used in opera: Soprano, mezzo-soprano, contralto,
tenor, baritone, and bass. We are also learning and reading about the life of
of the composer,Rossini.
Did you know Florence,Italy was the place in the 14th century where opera began?
Rossini was born in the town of Pesaro, Italy and his parents were also
musicians. His father was a horn player and mother was an opera singer. He
stole the overture for the opera Cinderella from a previous opera called "La
Gazetta," because he had a deadline to meet and was in a hurry to get the
opera completed for the first performance in Rome on Dec. 26, 1817. Check out
your student's knowledge of this important opera composer.
We are also learning the lyrics, and analyzing the rhythm, melody pitches or
what we call (solfa), and form for the song "Dinah". Have a great Spring
singing songs and learning about your favorite with your kids.
