Peek At Next Week for Mrs. Wilson's 1st Grade Class
** Our gym is FINALLY getting air conditioning! Due to work in this area, P.E. will be held outside (as long as the weather cooperates) until January. On chilly days, please send a jacket with your child to wear at P.E. Please put your child's name somewhere inside the jacket.
** A note about Home Readers: Please make sure your child is reading from his/her Home Reader each night. Yes - I actually expect your child to read the same book over and over again for an entire week . Rereading text is FANTASTIC!! It may seem boring, but research has shown that rereading text helps build fluency, vocabulary and overall reading skill more than almost any other technique. One of the main things that we are working on right now is fluency and expression. Many beginning readers read word-by-word, and while this is okay for early readers, our goal is to get these children "reading like we talk". A great way to practice this is by "echo-reading". You read a sentence, and then have your child "echo" that same sentence back to you (you should really ham it up with expression while doing this, and get your child to mock you - what 1st grader isn't looking for the chance to "mock" their mom or dad ;) Look for any way to make it fun - maybe you could echo after your child - especially if they are reading choppy word-by-word. Show them the difference between that and fluent reading. Have fun!
Next week, we will be focusing on 5 new Word Wall Words:
because, father,
want, has, night
Please do not feel that you child needs to have mastered all of those yellow cards that I sent home. We focus on 5 words a week, and you should do the same at home. So far, we have covered the following words: like, my, you, said, look, one, going, got, his, with, she, for, he, sent, have, will, they, run, yes, was, big, not, where, day, out, down, of, are, from, little, who, her, then, get, away, be, fun, had, into, if, an, him, no, but, so, came, home, could,
why, again, first, do, eat, mother, saw, what, after, there, make, did
In Phonics, we are learning about consonant digraphs - /th/, /sh/, /ch/, and /wh/
In Math, we are exploring addition facts to 10. We are learning about "addends" and the communicative property of addition (we call them "turn-around facts"). We will also be learning about "fact families".
We will also be exploring Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving.
