This week we are working on consonant clusters: pl-, cl-, fl-, gl-, and bl-. Our children are so excited about writing in cursive! They are doing an awesome job, too! Starting in January students will be required to write all assignments in cursive. Some of the kids are so excited that they are choosing to write most of their work in cursive now. I am so proud of them!! Just so you know, I have given the children a choice on spelling tests. They know that they do not have to write in cursive yet, but if they choose to write their spelling words in cursive they are responsible for correct letter formation. This means that if they form an "m" when it needs to be an "n" the word is counted wrong, and so on. This may seem a little tough since they are new cursive writers, however, they have made the choice. Also, quite often a little consequence such as a low grade will give children the incentive to be more conscious of their writing. Rushing is still one of the biggest problems for third graders! Cursive letter formation in daily work is not counted wrong. I use this as an opportunity to help the students learn the correct letter formation. We spend quite a bit of time trying to correct cursive errors made in daily work so they will be prepared in January for writing everything in cursive. Students should be practicing their words every night at home to be prepared for the test on Friday. Thanks again for all you do!! Merry Christmas!!
