HOMEWORK POLICY
Friendswood High School believes that homework is an integral part of the
school program. Homework is appropriate to reinforce classroom learning, to
practice previously learned skills, to finish class work, to pre-read
instructional materials, and to complete special projects. It's the student's
responsibility to keep up with assignments if absent for any reason.
Homework should be sufficiently explained to students so that they understand
what is to be done, why, and how. Homework should not be used to introduce
new information, concepts, or skills, except for the pre-reading of
instructional materials and/or inquiry-based instruction.
Homework is never to be used as disciplinary measure, but to enrich and
strengthen classroom experiences.Effective homework assignments do not just
supplement the classroom lesson. It also should teach students to be
independent learners. Homework should give students experience in following
directions, making judgements and comparisons, raising additional questions
for study, and developing responsibility and self-discipline.
Homework can be a necessary part of the instructional process that begins in
the classroom, extends into the home, and provides a way for parents/guardians
to become aware of the instructional program and their child's educational
program. Parental involvement would include : setting up a consistent
organized place for homework to be done, establishing a consistent schedule
for completing homework, and encouraging, motivating, and prompting the child.
Parents should not sit and do the homework for their students !
