Born in the small east Texas town of Jacksonville, Kara Baker has been dancing
most of her life. After spending many years in the studio, she found her true
love and passion in life in high school dance team. She served as 2nd Lt. her
junior year and Captain her senior year of the Jacksonville High School
Cherokee Charmers. She went on to Kilgore College where she became a member of
the world famous Rangerettes and a member of the Swingsters, the Rangerettes' specialty jazz
group. Mrs. Baker continued her education at Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State
University) where she served as President of the dance club Orchesis. After student teaching at
Bowie High School in Austin, Mrs. Baker became the Assistant Director of the Westlake High School
Hyline for three years. In the summer of 2001, she moved to Houston and
became the Director of the Friendswood High School Wranglerettes. This
year marks her ninth year at Friendswood and her twelfth year as a dance educator.
Mrs. Baker enjoys giving back to her profession by serving on the of Texas
Dance Educator's Association (TDEA) board for seven years and as President for 2007-2008.
She was thrilled to be nominated by her peers as one of four 2007
TDEA Director of the Year Finalists and one of six semi-finalists for 2008 and 2009.
Her students have gone on to dance in college and university programs at
Kilgore College, Texas A&M, the University of Texas, Blinn College, the
University of Houston, Baylor University, Sam Houston State University, Texas State
University, and Texas Tech. She is excited to have former students starting their
dance education careers in the Dallas, Austin and Houston areas.
The dance department offers an introduction to dance in its various forms.
Through movement and discussion classes, the students will learn dance
terminology, history and technique. They will also gain physical coordination,
flexibility and strength. By learning about dance, they will also gain a new
appreciation for the art form, learn the value of hard work, and experience the
joy of working well with others.
