Welcome to Friendswood High School Theatre Department! We are excited that you are a part of FHS Theatre. You are about to become an active member of one of the finest and oldest Fine Arts programs in the State of Texas. Here at FHS Theatre we “run” on “kid” power so get ready to work. There are so many opportunities for all students to participate both on and off stage. Our UIL record in One Act Play has earned us the reputation as the top AAAA UIL theatre program over the past ten years. Baylor University Study Our All – School Fine Arts Musical has a 41 year tradition and has won the prestigious Tommy Tune Awards Best Musicalfor our production of South Pacific. Excellence in Arts Education is what we strive to achieve. Theatre offers you many opportunities to collaborate with students from all across our student body. Athletes, Quarterbacks, Swim Team, Soccer, Basketball, Track, Baseball, Drum Majors, School Mascots, Valedictorians, Salutatorians, Choir, Debaters; We have had them all in our One Act Plays. The Fine Arts Department at Friendswood High School is a student-centered department whose philosophy focuses on the arts through drama, music, dance, art and speech. We believe that the fine arts provide students with the opportunities to exhibit self-discipline, share in the group experience, develop personal skills that will prepare students to communicate and compete in a world of many diverse communities and cultures by making art. As a Theatre Department our philosophy is summarized by something we remind our students of: "How you work on stage is how you will work in real life.” I ask my students to be generous with each other and to trust that they are enough. Although we are quite proud of our products, we teach process as a cooperative effort between students, directors, instructors, parents, community; and, most importantly, self. We train actors to work towards unity and harmony among all the components of theatre. Being production centered we encourage students to find their personal strengths as they work in class and in performance. It is our goal that as they make these discoveries through use of exercises, games and analysis of characters, they will be ready to embrace through dramatic literature and performance the beauty of the human experience. The FHS Theatre Department teaches Theatre Arts I-V and Technical Theatre I-IV, each providing a progressive in depth study of theatre, acting techniques, and technical-theatre aspects in both full-stage and arena-style theatre. The Friendswood High School Counselors and I can offer students guidance to help you keep Theatre in your class schedule. There are many ways that our students take advantage of our production schedule yearly. We encourage students to see our productions, audition for our productions and earn a place on the production team. Data and studies show that students enrolled in fine arts courses score higher on the SAT than those with no fine arts coursework. Students of the arts continue to outperform their non-arts peers on the SAT, according to reports by the College Entrance Examination Board. Data from the College Bound Seniors National Report from 2001-2005 shows that students enrolled in fine arts courses score from 6 to 11% higher than students not enrolled in any fine arts courses. So WELCOME! Get ready to work!
