FHS
Practical Math Students & Parents 2008/2009
Welcome to Mrs. Maxwell's
class!
The ability to apply
mathematical applications to everyday life is a developed skill that requires
repetition and practice to master. Whether you are balancing your checkbook or
filing your taxes, the basic skills of math are developed in the classroom and
practiced in homework. In order
for a student to have a successful experience in mathematics at FHS, the following are the policies and
procedures adopted in my classroom.
Please read carefully because they apply to all students.
1. All students are required to have a
calculator. The TI-83 (or
TI-83 Plus) is recommended and supported by the math department and
myself. Students may not use
the TI-89, TI-92 or any calculators with advanced programming capabilities. If
a student chooses to use a different graphing calculator, then they are
responsible for knowing how to perform mathematical functions on that
calculator. If they choose to bring an unacceptable electronics to class, it
will be picked up by the teacher and returned at the end of the year.
2. Showing work is required for all
problems whether homework, quizzes or tests.
Credit
will not be given for just having the correct answer. ALL WORK MUST BE COMPLETED IN PENCIL.
3. Grades are uploaded to the FHS server
on a weekly basis and are available for viewing on Wednesday of each week. Visit http://www.fisdk12.net and click on Parent Access to Student
Information. You will need to know
the student ID & PIN
number to sign up for access to the information.
4. CELL PHONES, CD players,
IPODS, etc. are NOT allowed in the classroom. FHS policies will be enforced with respect to these items.
Unacceptable electronics will be confiscated.
5. All students are required to be in
class on time (BEFORE the tardy bell) prepared for class with their math
notebook*, completed homework, calculator, pencil, planner and additional
paper. The student will not be allowed to return to their lockers for
forgotten items.
6. For absences due to school business
(athletics, field trips, competitions, etc.) all schoolwork is to be made up in
advance of the absence or it is due upon the day of return. Otherwise it will be considered late work.
7. Make up work is only accepted
for absences, in accordance with the Mustang Manual. (Refer to #10 if absence
is do to school business.) A student has as many days to make up work, as
he/she was absent, but a maximum of 5 days. Work that was assigned prior to that absence is due
upon their return. Make up work will also take into
consideration the students accommodations. Late work will be taken for half-credit
if it is handed in before 8:30a.m.,
the day after it is due.
8. Content Mastery tutorials are offered
four times every week.
Monday thru Thursday from 3:50 pm to 4:50 pm.
See tutorial schedule for
specific room assignments.
9. Additional tutoring outside of FHS is
at the discretion of the individual student
and his/her parents. Possible contacts for tutoring may be
obtained in the
Counseling Center.
10. This copy MUST remain in the studentŐs
binder for quick reference.
We have an exciting and busy year ahead of us. In order to ensure that maximum learning
occurs, there are a few behavior guidelines that must be followed. These guidelines are extremely
important in maintaining a productive classroom. Severe or continuous inappropriate behavior will result in
immediate removal to the Assistant Principal's office.
1. Bring required materials to class daily
2. Stay on task in an appropriate manner.
3. Keep hands/feet/objects to yourself at all times.
4. NO
profanity, put downs or rude gestures.
5. Follow teacher and school rules (i.e.: dress code,
ID's on, etc.).
6. Be on time; go to locker, restroom, etc.
before entering classroom.
7. NO food or drinks in classroom.
In order to improve both
study habits and skills, homework will be given approximately once a week to
reinforce learned skills. Each
student is responsible for keeping up with their own Math textbook and
Planner. Each student will update
their assignments, homework, and tests weekly in their Planners for a
grade. This will help prepare them
in developing positive study habits and independence in learning. It is your
responsibility as a student to complete and turn in all assignments; and
obtain, complete and turn in all make up work in a timely fashion according to
the Mustang Manual.
The following supplies will
be needed
for either Practical Math I, Practical Math II, Practical
Math III and TAKS Math:
I will be conducting random
checks of Planners and binders for daily grades.
All test grades and
projects count twice and quiz grades count once in the test category. Tests and
Quizzes make up 25% of the 9 weeks grade; daily grades make up 50% of the 9
weeks grade and participation makes up the remaining 25%.
There will be a minimum of
16 homework grades taken each 9 weeks.
With your cooperation and
adherence to these guidelines, we will have a successful and productive
year! If you have any questions
please e-mail me pmaxwell@fisdk12.net
