Why does the spiral have to have a plastic cover?

The spiral will have an enormous amount of use, not to mention its constant
transport in backpacks.  Spirals without the plastic cover tend to fall apart
before the end of the year.  A 5-subject spiral with plastic cover will last
for 3 years of German class.
