PE/Wellness Policies

The purpose of the Physical Education/Wellness Program is to instill in each 
student the importance of physical activity and fitness as a lifelong habit.  
By using self-motivation and self-responsibility, we will help guide each 
individual in developing and obtaining goals to raise their fitness level. 
This class involves daily physical activity during class time and health 
lessons once a week.

MATERIALS
•  Dress out attire
•  PE/Health folder with paper

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
•  When tardy bell rings, students must be seated in proper squad line 
   spot.  
•  The students will be given 5 minutes after roll call to get ready for 
   class to begin.
•  Tardies- On the 3rd tardy, a d-hall will be assigned. Each tardy 
   after will result in a disciplinary referral and consequences based on 
   student policy.  At the beginning of 2nd semester, the student will start 
   with zero tardies.
•  Show good listening skills and follow directions.
•  Practice good manners with the teacher and peers.
•  Keep gym, locker room, and concession area clean.
•  Ask permission to leave class, use the bathroom, or get a drink.
•  At the end of class, students must meet in the gym until bell rings.  
   NO ONE IS ALLOWED IN THE HALLWAY OR OUTSIDE.
•  Do not use the equipment without permission.
•  No gum chewing allowed.
•  No large jewelry such as large hoop earrings, chains, pendants.
•  No horseplay will be tolerated.
•  No sodas will be brought to class or bought from the machines in 
   concession area. The coke machines are off limits until after school.
•  Participate in each activity as directed.  Effort and attitude are 
   contagious.

CONSEQUENCES FOR BREAKING CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
•  1st time-  verbal warning
•  2nd time- points, teacher/student conference, parent contact, 
   discipline referral if serious enough
•  3rd time-  parent/teacher conference, discipline referral

GRADING SYSTEM
•  70%  Participation/Dress Out
•  20%  Written Test & Fitness Test
•  10%  Fitness Challenge

PARTICIPATION
Each week during grading period, student may earn up to 100 points (20 points 
a day) for participation and dressing out.  The student must participate the 
WHOLE class period to receive full credit for the day.  Failure to 
participate or dress out will result in 5-20 points off that day and a 
referral to the office for insubordination.

•  Participation involves effort, attitude, willingness to work together 
   with peers, respect for others, and being on time for class activity. 
•  Each student must participate the entire period to get full credit 
   for the day. This includes health assignments, exercise, running, and team 
   activities.
•  Illness or Injury:  Each student is to take a doctor’s note to the 
   nurse before coming to P.E. She will give you a P.E. excuse to give to 
your teacher. Any note from a parent is to be given to your P.E. instructor 
at the beginning of class. Remember, a parent note is good for a maximum of 3 
CONSECTUTIVE days. Students without a doctor or parent excuse are expected to 
participate. Failure to bring an excuse may result in a written assignment 
and reduction in grade. Be sure to tell your teacher if you become sick or 
injured during class.
•  If a student needs to be out of school for more than 3 days, a 
   doctor's note is needed.
•  If a student has a note from a parent, the nurse or doctor, she will 
   do written work in class for the participation grade that day. The work 
must be completed during class for credit.
•  No excuses on Fitness Challenge or Mile Run days unless excused by a 
   medical doctor.  If excused by a doctor, a 500-word research paper will be 
   assigned for credit. Otherwise, student will make up the activity.

DRESSING OUT
All attire is required to be 100% dressing out!
•  PE attire consists of:
	- white/gray t-shirt
        - blue/black shorts with at least a 5-inch inseam: Student’s          
forefinger fingertip should be the length of the shorts. Shorts out of dress 
code will result in a referral for dress code. 
        - Athletic shoes
        - Socks and jogging bra is recommended
        - Hair in ponytail or pulled back with a soft headband (if hair is 
too short for ponytail).
        - No jewelry.
•  Students must dress out everyday unless otherwise told by 
instructor.  If a student has a note excusing her from PE, she still must 
dress out or she will be assigned a detention.
•  Students who do not bring P.E. clothes are still expected to 
participate in class.
•  Please be sure to label both your shorts and shirts with your first 
and last name with a permanent marker. This will help us identify clothes 
that are left in the gym and locker room.
•  Warm ups may be worn in cool weather (blue jeans are not considered 
warm ups).
•  Athletic shoes are required.  No flip-flops, slip on shoes, or bare 
feet will be allowed! 
•  Students are reminded to take their clothes home at the end of each 
week to be washed.
•  Listed are guidelines from the Student Handbook on dress code, please 
use the handbook as a reference for further descriptions:

WRITTEN TESTS
Students will be tested over some PE units and Health units* during each 9 
weeks. Students are responsible for placing all handouts and notes in their 
health folder.  Their tests will be based on that material.  If a student is 
absent on Health Day, it is the student’s responsibility to inquire about 
work missed.  Students will not need to dress out.
* Health lessons will be every Thursday.  

FITNESS TESTS
Students must have a doctor's note in order to be exempt from the nine weeks 
fitness test.  They will be required to do a research paper on an assigned 
topic to earn credit.

1st nine weeks- Students must jog/run 2 laps on track without stopping to 
receive 100%.
Student must jog/run 1 lap on track without stopping to receive 50%.

2nd nine weeks- Students must jog/run 3 laps on track without stopping to 
receive 100%.
Student must jog/run 2 laps on track without stopping to receive 75%.
Student must jog/run 1 lap on track without stopping to receive 50%.

3rd nine weeks- Students must jog/run 4 laps on track without stopping to 
receive 100%.
Student must jog/run 3 laps on track without stopping to receive 75%.
Student must jog/run 2 laps on track without stopping to receive 50%.
Student must jog/run 1 lap on track without stopping to receive 25%.

4th nine weeks- Students must jog/run 4 laps (mile) without stopping for time.
-10 minutes or faster = 100%
			-10:01-11:00 = 90%
			-11:01-12:00  = 80%
			-12:01-13:00 = 70%
			-13:00+ = 60%

FITNESS CHALLENGE
In order to promote cardiovascular endurance, we will be conducting a Fitness 
Challenge every 2 weeks.  We understand not every student is prepared to run 
long distances, requiring a system to help build running endurance. 
In our Fitness Challenge Program, students will be running for 20 minutes.  
During the first nine weeks, students will be required to jog one lap around 
the track before using the "Walking Zone".  Periodically, the initial 
distance will increase therefore by the end of the year our students are able 
to jog 4 or more laps around the track before using the walking zone.  We 
will record the number of completed laps for students in order to track 
improvement.  Grading scale is as follows:

Fall Semester:	8+ laps= 100
		7 laps  =  90
		6 laps  =  80
		5 laps  =  70 
	                4 laps  =  60
		1-3 laps= 50
			  
                                                  
Spring Semester:  9+ laps= 100
                  8  laps= 90    
                  7  laps= 80
                  6  laps= 70
                  5  laps= 60
                  4  laps= 50  
                  3  laps= 40
                  2  laps= 20
                  1  laps= 0

PLEASE NOTE:  GRADING IS AT PE TEACHER’S DISCRETION.  IF A STUDENT IS SHOWING 
NO EFFORT AND NOT FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS, GRADE WILL BE ADJUSTED.


FITNESSGRAM
In 2007, the state of Texas mandated all students from 3rd-12th grade be 
tested in a series of physical assessments to determine their physical 
fitness.  The tests are criterion-based, which is based on research 
determining how much fitness is needed for a healthy lifestyle.  The tests do 
not allow students to be compared to one other; it focuses on individual 
health and whether the child meets the healthy zone for their age.  FJH will 
test all students on campus.  There will be testing in the Fall and Spring 
semester.  The assessment measures three components of health-related 
physical fitness that have been identified as important to overall health and 
function:
•  aerobic capacity; 
•  body composition; and 
•  muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility. 

LOCKER ROOM INFORMATION
•  The students will be assigned a locker to share with another student 
in the same class.  The girls will need to furnish their own locks from 
home.  Please label the locks with their names. We encourage the girls not to 
wear expensive jewelry or bring expensive items to the locker room, If they 
do, these items need to be locked up.  We are not responsible for any stolen 
items.
•  The locker room door is locked each period of the day for security 
and safety reasons.  Students are not allowed into dressing room without 
permission during class time so that the locker room is monitored more 
efficiently.
•  Students will not be allowed into locker rooms before school, during 
any PE period except their own, or during lunch.  Lunch, lunch money, and 
homework should not be in the locker room in the first place, so student will 
not disrupt other classes for their irresponsibility.  
•  A Lost and Found is provided for those items left in locker room.  
The teacher is not responsible for the lost and missing items.  
•  No electrical items such as curling irons, hair dryers, propane 
items, etc.  They will be picked up and not returned until the end of the 
year.
