The Spurs
Team is excited to teach your seventh grader this 2009-2010 school year. Collectively we bring over 60 years of experience to the classroom. In order to ensure your child’s success
this year, we believe it’s important to familiarize you with information you
and your child need to know, including the following:
OVERVIEW
OF COURSES
Reading/Language
Arts--Nicole Ferro
Students will
read and analyze grade level literature and produce written pieces using
reading connections and the writing process. Grammar, mechanics and usage, and vocabulary skills will
also be practiced. Students’
writing folders will showcase their growth in these areas for the year.
Pre-AP
Language Arts-Nicole Ferro
The Pre-AP
curriculum is the same as regular 7th grade Language Arts with the following
differences: Pre-AP Language Arts includes content
immersion in reading and writing.
It is writing intensive; students will complete a major project/essay
each grading period. Student
performance is assessed for the analysis and synthesis level of thinking. Successful Pre-AP students are typically
task oriented, proficient readers who are able to set priorities with regard to
time and responsibilities.
G/T
Humanities-Carolyn Carhart & Nicole Ferro
Students in
these classes will maintain Pre-AP standards, but will go beyond these
skills. This curriculum is
integrated through both content areas with an additional focus on research,
presentation, and critical thinking.
Assessments include analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.
Texas History-Michelle Simmons
This course
provides the student the opportunity to broaden analytical thinking and
communication skills through a detailed study of Texas from the discovery and
exploration period through the Twentieth Century. Students will be encouraged to develop the skills necessary
to analyze evidence and express an understanding of data in graphic organizers,
outlines, essays, etc. These are
types of skills students will need in future Pre-AP and AP Social Studies
classes.
7th Grade
Math--Lisa Liverman
Students will
apply problem solving strategies to solve real world math problems. They will use the four operations
(addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) to solve problems with
fractions, decimals, percents, and integers. Computation skills will also be strengthened.
Pre
Algebra-Lisa Liverman
The students
will master all prerequisite skills to prepare them for Algebra the following
year. Problem-solving strategies
will be stressed throughout the year.
Algebra 1
-Lisa Liverman
The students
will master all Algebra 1 concepts to receive high school credit.
General
Science I--Megan Marshall
Students will
have the opportunity for hands-on activities, independent study and application
of course content.
GT/Pre-AP Science I--Megan Marshall
The Pre-AP
curriculum is the same as the regular science classroom with the following
exceptions: Stronger emphasis will be placed on higher level thinking skills
applied to scientific experiments and questioning, more focus on organization,
more hands-on experiences with dissections, field trips and other activities.
We look
forward to working with your child and hope to enjoy a challenging and
rewarding year ahead. If you have
