LIFE SKILLS COURSE OUTLINE WELCOME TO THE BYRDS NEST I am looking forward to having a wonderful year with all of my students. I hope everyone had a great summer and are ready to get back into the swing and challenges of a new school year. Lets make the school year 2007 - 2008 the best year ever. Below you will find a over-all view of the school year and activities. CURRICULUM: Each student will be taught the skills he or she needs based on each students Individual Educational Plan ( IEP ). Skills from five areas will also be part of each students curriculum. These areas are Community, Domestic, Recreation- Leisure, Pre-vocational, and Self-Help. Students will also be taught Functional Academic Skills for Math and Reading. GRADES: Students grades will be determined by a percentage of how many correct answers divided by the number of possible answers. Example: If a student received 8 answers correct and there were 10 possible answers, the student would receive an 80 on the assignment. Grades will be taken daily and the assignments are based on the IEP goals and objectives of each student. A participation grade will be given on assignments where the student does not produce a written product and data is collected for that assignment. The students ability level verses how well the student performed on a given day will be taken into consideration in order to determine the grade for the assignment. LATE WORK: Students will be given one extra day to complete assignments done in class, if the student was present for the class work, without a penalty. The student will receive a 70 on any late assignment after the days grace period. MAKE-UP WORK: Students will be given the same number of days absent to make up any class work without a penalty. After the days have expired, the student will receive a 70 for the assignments. HOMEWORK: Students will be given homework for assignments in which the student needs extra practice. The homework is due the next day of class at the beginning of class. Homework not completed by the beginning of the next class will receive a penalty of 10 points per day up until 3 days. The student will receive a 70 for the assignment after the third day. FIELD TRIPS: Field Trips will be taken throughout the year for the teaching of Community Skills. Permission slips will be sent home to be signed and returned to school before the field trip date. If a student does not return the permission slip, the student will go through his or her regular school day. I am looking forward to a wonderful school year. I am sure it will be a rewarding and fun experience. If you have any questions or concerns, please write them in the students communication book or call (281) 482-7818 ext.142. HAVE A GREAT YEAR!
