The purpose of this Web site is to educate others how to create guided reading books and big books so that students may become strategic and independent readers and to provide templates whereby students may publish their work on a regular basis. It is imperative that we provide students opportunities to read and write EVERY day!
The text we give a child to read should support what he/she knows about the reading process. The guided reading books are designed to be used with small groups of children grouped according to their reading ability. Big books are designed for whole class instruction using a projector or TV monitor. Additionally, big books may be placed on the desktop of the student computer so that students may read them during computer centers.
As students read "just right books", they will make connections that may help them as they write. The same is true for writing. As students participate in writing activities such as shared writing, guided writing, and independent writing, they often make connections that will help them as they read.
