Children should be reading to an adult every night for at least 20 minutes.
My students should always bring home a familiar book to read for fluency. We
describe fluent reading as smooth reading. It sounds like the way we talk
and students are using their voice to tell the story. If the students are
introduced to a new book in class, then they should bring that book home
also. Remember that they have read it at least once, and
usually twice in class.
Children also need to hear their parents reading to them daily. You are a
great model for your children! They need to hear the expression and smooth
reading that you use when you read. Your voice brings meaning, excitement
and enjoyment to reading.
All 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders have a log-on to VMath. They can practice
activities that we are working on in class every day.
