Every child will enter kindergarten with differing experiences and differing
amounts of knowledge. What I can do is tell you what many children
will enter kindergarten able to do and a few things to practice.
Most entering kindergartens can...
1. recognize several letters of the alphabet
2. make the sound for several letters of the alphabet
3. can flip through a book and talk about what is happening in the pictures
4. draw a picture using basic shapes
5. write his/her first name
6. count to 20
7. count objects one by one to 10
8. cut near the lines of an object with scissors
9. roll play-doh snakes
10. tear paper with fingers
11. pull a piece of yarn through a small hole
12. can sit for about 20 minutes and focus on one task
What your child should practice before entering into kindergarten...
1. tying his/her shoes
2. unzipping and zipping his/her backpack
3. opening snack packages independently
4. folding his/her rest towel
5. buttoning and unzipping his/her pants
6. opening a band aid package and putting on the band aid
7. cleaning up his/her toys in less than 5 minutes
8. complying with a request the first time asked
