Reading homework has begun. Each student is bringing home a book bag with nightly homework. Levels 3-12 will be practicing reading nightly, orally summarizing, practicing sight words, making connections to text and discussing vocabulary with parents for homework. Beginning at a level 14 students will be expected to read, answer written comprehension questions, discuss vocabulary, practice high frequency phrases and complete graphic organizers that are specific to the skill we are working on. Please make sure you give your child your full attention during this 20 minute block. Spelling homework will now be coming home also. I have used the easier sight words to introduce the process of how we will do spelling. As we get into the more complex phonograms the words will become increasingly more difficult. The following words are what we are working on: Review/teach first 26 phonograms a, I, at go, so, no in, it, if be, he, we, me going, to, do, into is, as, its, an by, my, and, on up, us, of but, just, put, went did, get, got, from has, had, him, his many, man, mom, not Teach: silent e; came, like, make some, come, have Teach bossy r: er/ir her, after, over, were first, girl, bird, dirt Teach: ur/wor blur, blurt, curl, fur word, work, worm, world Teach: ear earn, learn, early Teach: sh ship, fish, shrug Teach: ee see, bee, agree Teach: th than, that, the, there these, other, with, them, then, this teach ai/ay day, may, aid, bait Teach: ow now, how, down, Teach: ou about, house, our, out four, would, could, your Teach: aw/au claw, saw, fault, auto Teach: ew/ui threw, few, fruit, suit Teach: oy/oi boy, boil, toy, foil Teach: oo look, foot, floor Teach: ch chip, school, chef Teach: ng ring, swing, bring Teach: ea eat, head, great, each Teach: ar car, are, chart Teach: ck check, black, luck, Teach: ed added, called, walked Teach: or for, more, port Teach: wh what, when, which, who off, will, all grass, pass, fuzz, buzz Teach: oa boat, coat, goat, throat For things to work on with your child on math, science and social studies, please see the "Talk to your children about..." section of the current newsletter.
