Science Notebooks

Using Science Notebooks - Prepare to be Amazed!

What is a Science Notebook?

"Notebooks are meant to be tools for students to record both their data and thinking as they work with materials. They are utilized prior to the investigation to record the students' thinking or planning; during the investigations to record words, pictures, photos, or numbers, possibly getting wet and messing in the process; and after the investigation to help students reflect on their thinking and data in order to share them with others." Science Notebooks Writing About Inquiry, pg. 2.

We are committed to involving our students in inquiry-based investigations. Students are encouraged to communicate their new understandings of concepts through notebook writings. Since our Science lessons are 80% hands-on, we are utilizing Science Notebooks as a tool for students to convey these concepts, make predictions, to analyze data, and to draw conclusions about their experiments. Notebook writing will also allow students to strengthen their math skills and language skills as they understand their world. As their teacher, I will be able to provide immediate feedback and support. These notebooks will then be used to create products based on our findings.

The students will become "researchers" using the notebooks as real scientists would use them. They will make predictions, make observations, ask questions, draw graphs, tables, and charts showing their knowledge, learn new vocabulary, and generate new projects based on their own observations.
