Writer's Workshop
Mini Lesson: 10-15 Minutes
We begin Writer's Workshop with a mini-lesson at our meeting area on the large carpet. This is where we explore the conventions of writing. It is where I can model strategies and techniques that authors use when thinking about writing and then writing. All of this in only 10-15 minutes...a mini lesson to focus the student's minds on one task.
Independent Writing and Individual Conferencing: 30 Minutes
The students will go to their desks and write independently or with a partner. This is where they will learn to take small ideas and elaborate on them to tell interesting and meaningful stories. The student's will also meet with me individually to set writing goals, to assess growth, and to teach or reteach skills and strategies. The students will write a first draft, revise their ideas, edit, and publish a written piece monthly to every 6 weeks. At the end of this time we will have a celebration and share our "published" pieces. All parents are invited to this celebration! Please look for the announcements in our weekly online newsletter.
Share Time: 5-10 Minutes
Students come back to the meeting area every day for a Share Time and Reflection. Students may be asked to share a strategy that they learned or to read an interesting part of their writing. They will then get the honor of sitting in our "Author's Chair". Students may also request help with their writing from the other students if they feel they are stuck on a piece and need fresh ideas.
