Reading Workshop

Reading Workshop

  What Is Reading Workshop?

Independent Reading/Word Work:  15-30 Minutes

The first thing the students do in the morning, after they have turned in their daily folders and homework, is browse through my books and make their selections for today.  They may pick any book, magazine, big book, or comic book for the first Independent Reading session.  However, they must choose a "Just Right" leveled book for the second Independent Reading session.  During this time, I will pull selected students for intervention purposes to work on the Spelling Patterns Word Wall or practice with a "Making Words'' session.

Mini Lesson: 10-15 Minutes

We will then move on to a  mini lesson that lasts approximately 10-15 minutes. Each mini lesson will focus on a reading strategy. There may be times where a strategy will be studied over the course of several days, in which case the mini lessons that week will be related to that strategy.  The students are then asked to go to their reading spots (Book Nooks) and practice the skill they have been taughts.  They will be asked at the end of Reading Workshop what they learned about themselves as readers in this session.

Independent Reading/Guided  Reading: 45 Minutes

This second Independent Reading time will incorporate several activities:

  • Meet with Reading Buddies - Buddies set up meeting times to discuss a text that they have chosen to read simultaneously
  • Record in Reading Logs–Students record information about the books they are reading in their Reader's Notebooks.  The information asked of the students will guide them to think about their reading, their book choices, and records information for a genre study.
  • Guided Reading- Small groups of students read a chosen selection with support from Mrs. Kaufman approximately 3 times a week.  Strategies are discusses, connections to learning are made, and concentrated word work is practiced.
  • Conferencing with Students -  Mrs. Kaufman meets with selected students twice a week to assess student progress, aid in book selection, and document reading behaviors.

Share Time: 10 Minutes

During this time the students may be asked to do some of the following:

  • Answer the question, "What did you learn about yourself as a reader today?", "What did you learn today that you will do again and again?"
  • Share a wonderful thing about a book that you are reading.
  • Think about the mini-lesson and how it applied to today's reading.

Assessment

Students will be assessed using the following tools:

  • DRA/PAPI Testing
  • Grading Rubrics
  • Teacher's Anecdotal Notes
  • Guided Reading Checklist
  • Student Self-Assessment
  • Running Records
  • TAKS Preparation Testing
