February 8, 2010

Dear Families,

We have begun a new unit about America.. Some of the topics that will be covered include:
American symbols such as The Liberty Bell, The Statue of Liberty and the USA flag.
National Anthem (We might hear the anthem played during the Olympics!)
Motto-In God we Trust
Pledge of Allegiance-recite and explain the meaning of the pledge

We will read about several historical figures who have exemplified good citizenship such as Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. We will also learn about Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison who exhibited a love of inventiveneness.

We  are learning to identify a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter by name and value. We will learn to make equal trades between coins such as five pennies equal one nickel. It would be awesome if your child could use actual coins. Please consider sending in 10 pennies, 5 nickels, 2 dimes and 1 quarter to school.

Our spelling words are our friends' names. The test on Friday will be in a multiple choice format. Students will only need to identify the correct spelling of the names.

We made our Valentine "mailbox" on Friday, February 5 during our enrichment block.  Let's wait until Wednesday (Feb 10) as the earliest date to send in cards for friends. (They get too excited and want to peek in the bags.) Yes...your child may attach a piece of candy to their cards. FMNV's (Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value) are allowed on designated party days. Sweet!!!

We are looking forward to our party on Friday. We will start at 8:30 A.M. in the cafeteria.  The children will mix and mingle with all the other first grade children as they participate in different stations. Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to help and/or send in supplies.

The children will open their cards in our classroom after lunch. We will glue the cards into a memory book in alphabetical order. This is a nice keepsake from their friends.

We will read "The Dove's Letter" by Keith Baker and work on writing friendly letters.

Please sign and return the bottom portion of your child's progress report.

Don't forget to turn in your Read to Succeed form by the end of this week.

Have a lovely  week.

Kathy

P.S. Flat Stanley has sent us lots of postcards and pictures. His latest travels took him to New York City and he got to see the Statue of Liberty! I hear he is going to Thailand next week!

P.P.S. We are expecting a very special delivery on Wednesday. Can you guess what it is? Hint-It starts out very quiet and then in 21 days it gets very loud.
