--------------------------------------
Do you accept late work?
Yes - because "taking a zero," or just not doing the work, is not an
option! Students lose 30 points (of 100)if they cannot turn the work in
when it is due in class. If they do not have it by the next day, there is a
50 point penalty. After that, they need to complete wthe work in my
presence so I can assess what they are learning and give them a grade for it.
--------------------------------------
Do you give extra credit?
I like to offer students plenty of opportunites for excellence, but I will
not give students extra work if they cannot keep up with the regular
coursework. Extra credit is not something that should be counted on to
replace missing work.
--------------------------------------
How can I find out today's homework?
Students should have the day's assignment written in their planners. If a
student is absent, he or she can try the website or call a friend.
--------------------------------------
Is there a way to find out if my student is turning in work?
If you can not be certain your student is turning in work, you may e-mail
me with your concern. It is much easier for me to respond to e-mail.
--------------------------------------
What can I do if I am not satisfied with a test grade?
You are welcome to re-test if you have done poorly on a test (below a 70%).
Before any test, I provide the students with a list of material to review
from notes and assignments. If you can show me a review, you can earn some
points back on your test (and have the opportunity to see what you did wrong
and learn from it so you don't make that mistake again!).
--------------------------------------
Does class participation count?
Yes! Yes! Yes! Much of the learning will be driven by participation in
class, through discussions, daily work and homework. Failure to participate
can bring down a student's grade, as participation in class and on class
assignments is worth quite a bit of the total grade.
--------------------------------------
What are all the spiral notebooks for?
Many teachers are moving toward use of an interactive student notebook
(ISN). We ask for a 3-subject spiral because it has the right number of
pages to make it through the year. The idea is that the students will
create a portfolio / toolkit of information and assignments that encompasses
the entire year.
--------------------------------------
What is WEB?
WEB stands for Where Everyone Belongs. It is a group of 8th graders who
represent the Community & Service Area of Interaction at Grisham. Their
main purpose was origanally to run 6th grade orientation, and to be mentors
for 6th graders through out the year, but their role has evolved. Now our
WEB leaders are expected to provide positive leadership for their peers as
well. WEB leaders may be called upon by teachers or administrators to help
in all kinds of situations, from greeting parents and visitors on assembly
days to helping teachers on field trips.

What is a GENRE STUDY?
The genre study is the reading that students are required to do outside of
class, in addition to any reading we are doing as a class. Students are
required to read5 novels over the course of the year (2 in the fall and 3 in
the spring). They are required to read one from each of the four major
genres and one additional novel from their favorite genre. *TAG are
expected to read up to 8, but I am asking them to set a goal for themselves
that is reasonable. They will meet with me individually to determine what
their goal will be.
All instructions are found on my GENRE STUDY page. Read them carefully so
that you don't do extra work!
