Behavior Strategy

To apply a consistent and fair program to address inappropriate behavior I have developed a leveled plan as follows:

Level 1 – Verbal

Upon inappropriate behavior the student will be given a verbal warning. When possible this warning will be given so as not to embarrass or compromise the student. In addition a note will be entered on a behavioral log with the date and the offense.

Level 2 – Conference

If this is the student’s second offense, as confirmed by the Behavioral Log, the student will be given another verbal warning and will be asked to remain after class for a conference with the teacher. During this conference the teacher will attempt to ascertain the cause of the inappropriate behavior, ask the student for suggestions on how to avoid such behavior in the future, and collaboratively with the student plan a course of action to prevent future offenses. In addition a note will be entered on a behavioral log with the date, offense, and results of the conference.

Level 3 - Reflection & Contact guardians

If the student continues to exhibit inappropriate behavior, as confirmed by the Behavioral Log, the student will be given a Behavioral Reflection form to complete. This form must be completed before the end of the class period and should contain serious reflection with thoughtful insights. The teacher will discuss the answers with the student and again plan a course of action to prevent future offenses. The student’s parents/guardians will also be contacted and informed that this is the student’s third offense and that the next offense will merit a referral to the office. The answers to the Behavioral Reflection may also be shared. In addition a note will be entered on a behavioral log with the date, offense, plan, and parental/guardianal contact.

Level 4 - Referral & Contact guardians

On the student’s fourth offense they will be given a referral to the office which will detail the information in the behavioral log that led to the referral. The student’s parents/guardians will also be contacted.

Level 5 – Behavioral Contract

On the fifth offense a behavioral contract will be developed to govern the student’s behavioral goals and consequences. This contract will be signed the student, teacher, and guardians.

Other Behavioral Consequences may include:

·        Cooling-off time

·        Seat changes

·        Temporary confiscation of items that disrupt the educational process

·        Assignment of school duties such as cleaning up litter

Exceptions to this plan may include minor transgressions, such as gum chewing, which will merit a lunch D-hall or major transgressions, such as fighting, gang violence, and damage to school property which will merit an immediate referral to the office. Examples of offense that will merit a level are (this list is not all inclusive):

Negative Attitude, Cheating, Disruption of class, Gum/Candy/Food, Horseplay/scuffling, Missing Materials, Speaking at inappropriate time, Disruptive Noises, Out of Seat, Off Task, Other

Lunch D-hall Strategy

In addition to this leveled plan I assign lunch d-hall to students who consistently turn in late work, fail to complete minor assignments such as covering their book or completing their ISN, and I may choose to assign a lunch d-hall for minor transgressions such as chewing gum. Thus I have developed a lunch d-hall stragegy as follows:

1st D-hall: When a student is assigned a lunch D-hall for the first time they will complete an entry with their name, the date, and reason for the first offense in the behavior log. They will receive a lunch D-hall pass at this time. At lunch time they will show the lunch monitor their pass and promptly get their lunch and come to LUNCH D-HALL with the appropriate materials (based on their reason for lunch D-hall). They will give their pass to the teacher, promptly eat their lunch, complete their work, and sit quietly without talking or focused eye contact with other students/teachers. They may leave when released by the teacher. The student will take their materials and the food waste, which they will discard in the cafeteria trash can.

2nd D-hall: On the second d-hall assigned, the student will complete another entry in the behavior log. The student’s guardian will be contacted.

3rd D-hall: On the third d-hall assigned, the student will complete another entry in the behavior log. The student’s guardian will be contacted.

Referral: After receiving three d-halls or skipping two d-halls the students will be given a referral.

Skipping/Absent: If a student missed an assigned d-hall they will serve 2 consecutive d-halls starting on the following day. If a student is absent they must serve the d-hall upon their return to school.

The student will be counseled by the teacher during each d-hall.
